Ok just wired my front fog lights up, Found original plug under header tank as they were wired 2 a stupid button by leccie window buttons,
Just tried them in the dark an they dim the main beam and the whole set up gives less light out than just having main beam on its own,
-
So did you test what voltages came off the plug? Maybe its time to just rewire some relays and find a signal wire to the fogs and get actual 12V through them?
-
I used to have them on the relay system, Because my car is a 1988 model, I added big bumpers ,
So i found the fog light plug an wired it through that 2day,
So i suppose i could use that plug as the switch and go back 2 the relays,
-
Yeah you know the better cable and higher voltages is the only way to get decent lights fella!
-
I was totally dissapointed after waiting all day for it 2 get dark
I was like a kid waitin 4 santa 2 come
-
Its a sad fact 9V was bling back then like flares just in todays driving conditions you are better off re wiring the loom to decent relays instead of the fuse box! I had to put Audi TT zenons into my Rallye for the exact same reasons and I love OEM, but like my life more :lipsrsealed:
-
so its normal for the light looms to get just 9v then? my H4 plugs were getting 9v but i thought it was unsually low
-
Well yeah "but not as we know it Jim" Most bulbs are rated 12V-55w-60w and would love to see at least 11V for brighteness.... The loom and relay on the fuse box (10amps) just can't produce the juice! If the bulbs say 9V then thats what its rated i.e side lights, because I don't want to see light housings being melted
-
but with the engine running the new H4 plugs on my new loom receive just over 12v
-
New loom and plugs
-
Is there a way of uprating the looms and keeping dim dip?
I know everyone says bin it, but I like it for it's retroness.
-
did you fit a fog light relay? if not, this is why the voltage is low. see the fusebox faq for location, it needs to be a #53 relay like for dual horns, windows etc.
also, even when fully powered up they wont give out much light especially over main beams. they're designed to light up the road underneath the fog, not provide a shat load of extra light. if you want extra light at night use the main beams, thats what they are for.
-
I know they ay gunna give me loads of light, I just thinks they look smart when they on
I just didnt like the way they took brightness out of main beam,
I will try that fog light relay the weekend mate cheers,,

also your old mk2 fog housings by now will probably have lost the chrome plating, the mk2 uses plastic housings too which arnt the best. MK3 fog housings are made of metal and swap straight onto mk2 lenses :)
you can even strip them right down to swap over a damaged adjuster part, mine has MK2 lenses, MK2 adjuster housing and MK3 rear housing (I bought mk3 fogs uber cheap on ebay as all the adjusting bits snapped and glass cracked)
