Title: Wiper Stalk Fault??
Post by: scrappydoo on 13 November 2010, 15:08
Newbie here! Just got an '89 GTI 5dr and got an issue with the front and rear wiper(s). The fronts do not repond to the pulling in of the stalk to spray the wash (though they wipe fine when you physically move the stalk) and the rear one does not do anything (no spray or movement) when you push the stalk to activate it.

Is this a stalk issue or something more serious and will I be needing a new stalk or is there a repair I can do to the current one.

most likely the stalk is at fault here, could be the wire from stalk to fusebox for the washer motor has gone though. fyi the stalks changed in 1990, so make sure you get the right ones to match your car. hazard on dash = pre-90, hazard on column = post-90 :)

if you feel handy with the wiring, run a 12v wire to the green/red wire pin on the wiper stalk switch, pin T. a handy place to get 12v is the ignition switch red wire. stuff wire in the back of the socket on both pins.  if washers and wiper comes on, you know its the stalks. if not, its the green/red wire somewhere. hope that makes sence!
