Hi
Does anyone know how to change the passenger headlight bulbs on a mk4!! the bloody battery is in the way, and i cant understand why you would have to take the batt out when you need to change a bulb.
The bloke from halfords wouldnt do itfor me, said it has to go to the dealer for that!!
For a bloody bulb change!!!
What the F**k?
Anyone any ideas??
Thanx?

take the battery out?
even then i can't get my hands in there. easiest way is to take the bumper off

try that.

WHAT!! do all that just to replace a bulb!! my god!!
-
**starts to cry**

Dude, it can be done with everything in situ, but its just bloody hard. If possible, draft in a child or a friend with childlike hands!!
Believe it or not, whipping the headlight out is the quickest and easiest way - I got it down to a fine art in the end!!! You can have the bumper off in under 5 mins, headlight out, change bulb and all back together in under 30 mins.

30 minutes to change a bulb !
-
its just a load of hassle for something that should be so basic, even for a woman!! not ripping bumpers off, vw have p*ssed me off with this stupid design
-
Unfortunately, its the way that a lot of manufacturers are going - my Subaru is exactly the same, I need to take the headlights out to change any of the bulbs.

You dont need to take the battery out/bumper off, just unscrew the little plastic bit that's above the light, that should give you enough room, but it is very fiddly. Takes less than 3 minutes as long as you know how to clip the retaining spring back in (look at the other headlight to figure it out)

me and my boyfriend tried that topher, we couldnt get the sidelight bulb out, and it cut his hands up trying to fit his hand down there.
Iam gonna have to take it somewhere, god damn it.
-
You might as well take the battery out, it only takes a few mins and its only a few nuts. Make sure you secure the main bulb in with that clip thing
-
my battery has that silly 'coat' covering it lol, how does that come off?
-
Will have a look when I get home and let ya know

I've had a look and on mine the top cover just slides off with a bit of jiggling side to side. I haven't took the battery out yet so i wouldn't know how the rest comes out. I managed to fit my bulbs in without taking the battery out. I used a pair of twisers for the side light and a pair of long nose pliers for the main bulb. Did get a few cuts though.

Hey Sugar79,
where in the UK are you?

When changing bulbs you shouldn't really need to remove anything major, like the bumper or the battery, just the couple of black panels.? The first time i attempted to change the bulb took about half an hour, but that was at night time with minimal light, it WILL be fiddly if you're doing for the first time.? When taking the spring retainer off i suggest you pay close attention to how it is 'clipped' into place, this will save you some confusion later on.? But once you've understood how it all fits together you'll be able to do it within 5 mins, unless you've got hands like Shaquille O'Neal.?
