Hi,
I’m looking for a Golf GTI Mk2 16v Oak Green, 3 Door, Big bumper with Rainbow interior.
My budget was around £1500 but after doing some searching I think I might struggle to find a tidy one for that price so might have to sell the kids.
I’m new to Golf’s (and this forum) so was wondering what to look out for when viewing cars like the one above? Especially considering that they are likely to have done over 150k.
Do they have different versions of engine?
Where are the weak points in the chassis/body work for rust and ware?
Is there an easy way to see if the body has had any work done to it in the past (e.g. non standard panels/wings).
What should I look out for with the engines (tappets, smokey exhaust, oil leaks etc)
Is there a classified on this forum anywhere (can’t see one)
Any advice would be great, Thanks.

Have a blend on the search function pal. There is a whole wealth of information on this subject. The colour is not important, all problems carry across.
Good luck in finding one for £1500 though.
-
Ok thanks. I noted the colour in case someone replied saying “I know someone with one for sale!â€
Although I have tried searching and the results I get back are pretty specific problems. I just wondered if anyone new the common signs of wear and tare to identify a half decent example.
Thanks again

There are alway plenty on pistonheads to suit all budgets, but just be prepared to view loads of sheds in the hunt for tidy example. They are 20 years old after all, and although they are holding their money well at the moment, some multi owner cars will at some point have changed hands for very little money and almost been treated as disposable.
What do you want the car for? A reliable daily, or a toy for the weekend?
-
Great, thanks for the really useful links VdubNinja!
I would use it most days to get to work but it's only up the road, so I guess mainly for a weekend toy. I don't mind a project getting my hands dirty with it either.
I went and looked at the one on Autotrader at the moment up in Blackburn but the body and interior was a complete state so I walked away.
There's a couple of high mileage one's i've seen - 170/180k+, not sure if I should hold out and look for one with less miles though.
Thanks

Beautiful car BTW dubber36

I was lucky to find one earlier in the year for £1700 with FSH,
Ive had to replace the starter motor and need to replace the PAS pump but as long as its been looked after should be fine. IM sure others with a bit more experience with MKiis will be alble to advise but just keep an eye out for rust etc
Ive seen a few Oak Greens but going for over 2k is colour important? as others have said im sure there are some great examples out there but in different colours
-
Yeah, all >£2k really.
It's a second car and I've always loved the Oak green so would rather hold out for one tbh.
Great website though, really chuffed I found it. Thanks.

We have the car you want but u can't afford it lol. We paid the best part of two grand and we have to sort some bits out on it. Its now sorted but as you can tell very sort after. Might be an idea to look st a five door or different colour or find more money
-
Dont worry too much about history but its always good to have some. It wont all be up to date at that price anyway.
I would look at one that had a recent respray. Colour matching old paint is not easy and stand out big time! worst thing on all old cars
-
This one is a bit above your price limit, but it's being sold by one of the moderators on the MK2 Golf forum, so it should be an honest, straight car.
And if it's not, you know where to find him!
A bit far from Blackburn though.

Thanks. I'm going to look at this one in the morning.
Anyone know anything about this one?

There is one on autotrader that requires a little TLC (so the seller says)
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201043371614280/sort/priceasc/usedcars/engine-size-cars/1-7l_to_1-9l/colour/green/quantity-of-doors/3/maximum-age/over_10_years_old/model/golf/make/volkswagen/page/1/keywords/gti/postcode/eh75eh/radius/1500?logcode=p
Might be worth a look? All the good ones seem to be £2.5K+

After giving the car a once over, pay double the attention to the seller.
Lots of "Oak Green is rare, so more £££" merchants out there.

I had that with my car, seller must of said rare about 4x lol, I believed him at first :embarassed:
The most expensive thing to fix will be body work, unless you can weld etc.
-
Lol! I've already been all the way up to see that one (250 miles each way). It's a state, needs a good £1500 spent on the body work alone, drivers seat is so worn u can see the seat frame and there's no service history to back the mileage up.
Actually i've just bought the one from Pistonheads. Quite pleased with it (so far). It needs a starter motor i think and I think it's had a light knock on the front near side wing and repair but otherwise it's sound for the money. Got it for £1400. Spent a good 2 hours looking over it and used the matey-matey guide in the previous link. Spot on.
Thanks for all the advice
