How hard is it to remove the Bootlid glass and fit a different one? And if it's easy, what tools and what else do I need?
Thanks.

Not too difficult. You need to push the seal over the lip that holds it in place, from the inside. Once you've got it started, continue around the glass pushing the seal out. Once you're about 2/3 of the way round, the glass should pull off.
I'm sure there's some clever plastic tool that may be able to help you, but I'm hard and northern, so used my fingersĀ

I'm told the hard part is re-fitting it.... You need some string and loop it round the rubber and tease it back in...
Dare some someone else will give you a better idea!!
-
Are there any places that would do it for me? Or is that too specialised. I don't want to go breaking some glass.
-
Most Glass places or bodyshops!!
-
its really easy especially the rear screen. I use a screw driver but a plastic wedge will do. Push the seal over the inner lip. Once you get going its pretty easy, with a little pressue it will pop out when you have done about two thirds. To get it back in get some cord into the seal and cross it over then put the bottom edge in and pull the cord from the inside. Get some one to put a little pressure on it from the outside. Job done!!

Sounds pretty easy but I am confused by what you mean when you say cork? Like.. how?
-
oakgreengolf didnt write cork he wrote cord aka string
as stated start in a corner and use something to lift the rubber over the lip and then its a case of working your way round and your window is out then the cord/string sits in the slot in the window rubber then you put the window back in by pulling the cord to pull the seal back over the lip
if your removing your bootlid take the glass out first as it is easier then trying to remove it once the bootlid is removed

I could have a crack at it I suppose! And if not, bodyshop it is!
-
You may as well, if your skipping the old one?
-
I have done it with cord / string, makes it easier to be honest.
-
I will sell the old one on I suppose. I have about 20 things I need to chuck up at here at some point.
-
This will help me as I need to put my gti screen on cos am bored of the smoothed screen
-
i just push em out with my feet, not bust one yet. start in the corner and apply gentle but firm pressure. eventually it should pop out, once you have a bit of the glass out the rest will follow. same goes for 3 door rear quarters, cant do this with screen tho as it will crack. for them safest way is to cut the seal, if replacing you really want to use a new seal as re-using old one could lead to a leak, and screen swap isnt a job you want to do twice really
refitting is easier with string but ive done it without when i didn't have any. fit seal to glass, then drop it into the metal lip at the bottom. then work your way round using a plastic lever to pull the inside lip over the metal. it will take a while and kill your fingers but will get there eventually.
