What to do next?
Sprayed the grill bottom half red with rattle cans and it looked gash ,
(http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy200/skippybigballs/SDC12026.jpg)
As you can see colour match fail
so went and bought new grill and sent it off to be sprayed, just spray the bottom half i said.Picked it up today, and they have sprayed the whole thing.
I was thinking maybe carbon wrap the 2 slats :undecided: Thoughts or suggestions? :undecided:
Didnt want to leave it all red as i wanted some black to match the lights.
Will post pic with the the "ALL RED" grill on soon.
-
Looks like mine  I would just stick with black slats as your lights are black.Im not over keen on de-badged grills but they do look good just my opinion looks sweet though
-

Black slats was the plan, but now the body shop have sprayed the whole grill red.
Was thinking carbon wrap the 2 slats to get some black back :undecided:
-
Pretty sure mate the bottom panel of the grill clips off that way you could then respray the slats yourself without masking the bottom of the grill up,pretty easy to paint aswell.
-
Carbon wrap would look good :afro:
-
Carbon wrap would look good :afro:
Agreed or paint the bits you want black again. The black grille plus your lights break up the front nicely.
-
Thanks chaps.
I think carbon wrap the 2 slats is the way,
(http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/yy200/skippybigballs/vw%20golf%20mk3/FKSG805GrillG3Carbon.jpg)
my previous experience with the old rattle cans was not good.
With it being only a small area to wrap in carbon vinyl,i dont think its going to look too chavvvy.....
Only 1 way to find out
Pics to follow.
-
Wrapped the two front slats today
Must say quite impressed :smug:
Excuse the dirty car :embarassed:
-
eh that looks better than I though it would... good job.. how hard is it to use that stuff as I never have... it's got me thinking now!?
-

Quite easy to work with really,i used the 3M stuff off ebay.
Make sure you heat it up,makes it a lot easier to work with.I used the missus hairdryer
-
your car is looking very good hope mine will look as good as yours
-
Really like the carbon grill, looks sweet. Good job mate. Bet the misses was happy about you using the hairdryer  mine would go skits if i used hers, tried it before and then when it broke she went mental  Dont know why was only trying to dry the seats out
-
Looks wicked
I might have to pinch the idea and use it on mine! My slats need a respray anyway!
-
that grill looks great. the thought of carbon film usually makes me think of dodgy barry wagons but that looks good
-
Thanx chaps
Was just a test to see how it would look, didnt turn out too bad.
So now it stays
-
A couple more pics:

Get a mk3 when you can spare the cash. I did it, twice :lipsrsealed: Even though I rarely get to see my mk3 nowadays I still love it to bits

+1 .Something i would love to do......

The MK3 is a better looking car than the MK4 (bar Annis and R32s). Sure there are a couple of nice refinements but I'd rather put a MK4 1.8T in a MK3 and live without those nice refinements.

If I was doing a conversion it would be a mk2, mk3 is not much lighter then a mk4 so little to gain really.

Good day at the RR day at docs place.
Last time saw 114bhp.
Ive added de-cat pipe with straight through and now got a result of 118. bhp :smug:

I want to see more though
-
Your engines clearly healthy then with an output like that, want more from it then you'll probably need some serious head work, or an easier and possibly cheaper option is a transplant.
-
Im NOT spending another penny on it :lipsrsealed:(famous last words)
I want to go oldskool next, something like maybe mk1-golf/jetta/scirroco/caddy/passat/polo :undecided:

sorry but thats way wrong... iv had all 3 mate and now, as you know i have the S3 lump in my mk3
not much difference between a late mk2 and a early mk3 in weight..
trust me on this, the 1.8T in a mk3 (in standard 150/180bhp) will completely take the piss out of a mk4 golf or VRs with the same lump just like mine can easily out do a S3 or LCR without batting a eyelid.. its night and day mate
i like mk4's. but its a bold statement saying they are better than mk3's.. all depends which ones because id rather have my mk3 than any mk4.. (and iv had a few)
My opinion is the MK3 looks more oldskool and is more interesting when modified correctly than the mk4...it also has much more character..
And as a final note, its also great fun having a MK3 that can beat most cars on the road.. people just don't expect it. especially from a 5 door
-
or get a mk1 or small bumper mk2 and do the engine transplant on that, far more character and lighter
-
MK3 is more Old Skool compared to a 4 but not by much...
So you fancy something proper old skool as a toy eh? How long until you think you can turn that into reality? Good plan if you keep the mk3 as a good looking/running daily.
-
MK3 is more Old Skool compared to a 4 but not by much...
see you are missing the point, its best of both worlds.. not much older but they blend the two looks superbly
That said, mine is 1993 car so its just about same age as the last mk2's...
also mk2 might be slightly lighter, but is about as aerodynamic as a brick, the mk3 is much better for high speed...
-
F17bad i hear what your saying about the mk3 transplant,i just want something that looks older.
Maybe a mk1 jetta with an s3 lump
The mk3 is my first dub,yes i know i will regret selling it,and probably buy another mk3.
I just think there are nicer looking vw's i.e oldskool
Ive got the bug for more dub

^^^ My Man!
Brad, I'm not missing the point but I understand what you're saying.. Blend between the 2?... a little, but in reality the MK3 was a major redevelopment style wise and looks a sh*t load more similar to a mk4 than it does a mk2, like you say, the mk2 had the aerodynamics of a brick as does the mk1.. The fact that yours is a 93 doesn't make any difference to it's similarities to a mk2. Nothing designed in the 90's looks Old Skool to me i'm afraid.

Nothing designed in the 90's looks Old Skool to me i'm afraid.
missed the boat (you see what i did their ha) again. the mk3 has a similar look to the mk4 is what i was saying but does have similar traits to the mk2 too with the arch extensions etc...
its the perfect base for 250 + bhp... better base than mk2 or older IMO..
the 93 part does make a HUGE difference, if you strip back a late mk3 and a early one like mine it will all become clear.. I'm talking engines and things like wiring looms, pedal box, rust sealer etc... early mk3 is like mk2, late mk3 is a different ball game...

Ah now with that extra detail I see exactly what your saying, however, the man who own's this thread seems more interested in the looks of old skool over than what's similar inside.
Your point about better bases for engines is valid to a degree as like you say it was right in the middle of 2 key MKs, 2 and 4. Massive technology developments and changes in the 90s. Older cars can however appreciate modern engines quite happily even if it is a bit more work and IMO would be much more rewarding in the long term.
-
hear you.. its just the dynamics of the older stuff is not as great.. this is the point I'm trying to make..
Anything is rewarding if you have made it yourself, does not matter what base you use..
we are on with a mk2 starting this week, can't wait to see how it comes out

Hence why mines taking so long to get right with the little time I have to play on it, getting rid of as much of the old frailty as I can. (especially true in the electrics department)
Anyway, what you on about, my brick is proper dynamic init... Plus it cuts through wind like a fart through a tight ar5e.
Who's MK2? What are you doing to it? actually that's probably for another thread.

the guy that did my drive at home turned out to be a VW nut, air-cooled guy.. saw my mk3 and fell in love.. he has bought a F plate GTI MK2, and a AUM engine.. we are converting it for him.. and getting paid very well to do so..
the owner is not on here but i will start a thread.. car is a bit of a shed at the mo. already bought a mk3 GTI 16v for some parts as we are going to wide track the mk2 using the mk3 set up

Nice....
MK2, widetracked!? Donor Mk3!
If you post the progress on here your bezzie forum buddy will have a lot of input for you. :lipsrsealed:

The mk3 will have to die to give us the parts needed to go onto the mk2. a Mk4 had to die for the engine..
and yeah I'm sure he will

IMO, late MK3 was the better concept. Better wiring IMO and more refined.
However the build quality in terms of paint and rust etc was just sh!te compared to the early ones.
-
the late mk3 was built to cost
Although they are much easier to work on

Don't start the which mk is better debate!! Its all in the eye of the owner
Mk2 project sounds like fun cant wait to see it!!!
Oh and getting back on the subject of this red mk3, looking good mate!!

I wish people would stop posting pics of my old car
Awwwww, Hug?
I was dribbling over Brad & Ben's Mk3's last night, seriously considering getting another Mk3 when I've paid off the mk4 :lipsrsealed:
Me too pal!
