Title: Abs, airbag, handbrake: The warning lights of no reason?
Post by: Skred on 08 November 2010, 19:46

I concede to the forum wisdom again...

Mark III, 16valver - I bought her as a non-runner and am trying to return her to the road to join the rest of the pack after being off the road for a while so, in the attempt and put her through an MOT, am trying to iron out the niggles before the test.

Okay, upon starting the car the ABS light, the airbag light, and the handbrake light all remain on. After two/three seconds the ABS light and the airbag light will dim slightly but will not go off. When the handbrake is released it too will dim slightly but not go off. So, when driving along with the handbrake off there are the three dash lights illuminated. To attempt to understand why, I popped off the ABS/Airbag panel and 2 of the 6 wires were snipped which I reconnected but for no difference.

However, when I disconnect the ABS/airbag panel they go off (as expected) but the handbrake light returns to normal i.e. off when off, on when on. Confuddled is what I am!

Obviously until I get this sorted I can't put her for the MOT so does anyone know what I am dealing with?

So is that the next step? Scan, clear and try again?

This sounds very familiar. What year is the car?

The handbrake light along with the abs light can indicate a fault with the breaking system. Take it for a drive and try the brakes firmly, my guess is the abs won't work and the rear brakes will lock up way too easily.

Let us know how you get on.

Let us know how you get on Gover cos I need to scan my wagon with the Vagcom first which ebay is sending me. Then I'm gonna try to clear it and start again. May as well start from the beginning and at least I know I'm dealing with a current problem...

if the rear brakes lock up easily then get it scanned with vagcom for the faults. My car had the incorrect ecu fitted, once I found the right one (lots of hassle and expense) everything was fine. You could have the wrong or faulty ecu.

What are your ecu and pump part numbers, I've still got a record of all the options somewhere.

Right, just vagcom'ed the chariot in light of the current problem and this is what it kicked up:

VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.0
Wednesday, 17 November 2010, 15:36:18.

Chassis Type: 1H - VW Golf/Vento III
Scan: 01,02,03,08,12,15,25,41,56

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 01: Engine       Labels: Redir Fail!
   Controller: 037 906 024 AE
   Component: DIGIFANT 3.2        1820
No fault code found.
Readiness: N/A

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 15: Airbags       Labels: 6N0-909-60x-VW2.LBL
   Controller: 6N0 909 603 F
   Component: AIRBAG VW2          V00
   Coding: 00070
   Shop #: WSC 01268
1 Fault Found:
00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
            32-00 - Resistance too High

For some reason, it won't finish the scan unless I purchase the full software so it's not giving me an ABS or handbrake scan but from what it is scanning the fault in the airbag can be resolved according to Ross-tech Wiki by either:

Check Wiring from/to Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95)
Check Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95)

So now...where is the airbag igniter and is there any pointers when inspecting it?

I feel this whole thing just won't be simple or quick to fix. Stoopid

Nah I don't but I got this forum baby yeah!

Just out of curiosity, what software are you using with your vagcom to scan your ABS? Mine is VCDS-Lite but it won't scan it.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I am having my own ABS problem, and you may be able to help.

The part numbers I have are 1H2 614 217E on the pump, and 3AO 907 379E on the ecu.I googled the ecu number and apparently it has been superseded by 3AO 907 375A.

My problem is people listing them as a complete unit on ebay and the likes list them by the pump number,if you could tell me what one matches my requirements,I would be very grateful.Or even what models they were fitted to.
