Title: Project Red Demon
Post by: Martz on 07 November 2010, 21:32
Found this on a certain website -

I won't say how much I paid but it was far to low and you would have had to struggle to buy a decent branded 32" tv for what I gave! To say I am pleased is a understatement.

Plans - Dropping the Koni adjustibles and stainless steel exhaust from the smashed one and some other goodies on to it. Putting the deep dish wheels on and go from there. No rot on it and only 3 owners from new (1988).

Updates will follow................

Alright Jay, terrible with cars especially MK2's! Tally stands at 13 MK2's now!

I was also shocked as this has been garaged all it's life (so they say) but it is not far off from being perfect. And no rot under the windscreen gromit area!

Drove back for 2 hours and it did not miss a beat, oh and 12 months MOT! Loving it!

Just gave her 12 months tax so all good for a year of motoring, I will sort out the suspension later this week as it is a bit to cold and wet for my liking (plus I still have a stoopid snotty nose and hacking up yuk stuff, not nice!)

I need to take the dashboard out as it is cracked in places due to age I guess. I will be taking the dash out of the smashed one. Any ideas how easy/difficult this is? lol

Lay flat rear wiper to do, rear lense changing to 16v ones (or M3 style) see whats in the garage. The little 8v badge to go on also.

Today I got the badges of the scrappy one and have got them ready to paint to go on the old girl. That will freshen her up. What colour to paint them? Black or Silver? Thinking black personally. Changing the mirrors back to black oem ones too.

The Bosch system that goes with the K&N airfilter is going on too along with the stainless steel exhaust next week. Apart from that happy times.

Did someone call?

The place I used is called Cas Coatings and are based in Bradford. For kerbage repair, shot blasting and powder coating in basic colours they charge £1 per inch, so you'd be looking at £17 a rim. It was about a 36 hour turn around when they did mine!

Oh and they did a quality job, there's also a thread on uk-mkiv's singing their praises as well!

lol, couldn't be arsed to go around to the garage this morning so done it outside the house. Easy access to tea and biscuits!

Just got back from the garage after trying to remove to dash from the smashed one, what  a pig to remove. it's still in the car as I gave up, got to cold! Done a search on my phone on here for removal but couldn't find anything. Any ideas peeps? :undecided:

Gonna do the rear suspension tomorrow as that is far easier!
Title: Re: Martz new find!

Nice going in the cold... I think the issue with the dash in a mk2 is there are 2 nuts in the scuttle area as well as the ones either side of the dash....

All done, and tested. Very happy indeed. It is a little higher than the others I have owned as they were coilovers/lowered springs but as these little gems are Koni Adjustables they are awesome!  Next job will be to take it around the garage and get the alighnment sorted out as I am sure it will be a little out!

Next week the smashed one will be getting scrapped so there are a few items left on it before it goes. Check the classifieds for details!

Next job will be getting the stainless steel exhaust system put on. Hopefully I will do this next week. Oh, and dashboard swap!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Soooooooooo, been busy with my new venture so not much time put in to this. But yesterday I got a few more bits of the broken one to use for Red Demon.

Plans for the coming weekends -

Fit K&N Panel Air Filter
Fit M3 style rear lights (for a bit) *
Fit Crystal clear front lights*
Fit Crystal indicator lenses*
Put on the stainless steel exhaust system
Paint Rocker cover and refit
Put on the RA's that I should be getting soon after I have refurbed them
Fit dashboard as the current one is cracked with age
And the best bit..........................................
Fit the Rallye front seats that I have just won on eBay. I did like the ones I had so I have been keeping an eye out for some on the cheap (and I acheived it on a budget!)
Pics to follow.

*Keeping the originals to put back on at some shows

I found Shauns (SoundIllusion) advice most helpful. Was on the verge of giving up when I felt under the scuttle area and found the 2 nuts (10mm) and they came of easily. It was just a few wires clinging it on for dear life but I managed to unhook them so no problem. Took me 10 minutes to remove.

No progress as of yet, but took a picture this morning as I could not get to work due to the bad accident at Hatton Cross this morning (grid locked in the area until 1.30pm) so helped with the little one!

They come up now and then on eBay, price varies. Might see if our resident trimmer can get hold of the material to trim to match at somepoint.

That's a bugger if they don't then! May look at other cloth finishes then, that won't be for a while though. I guess I can live with a back seat being different! lol

Agree with you Shaun on the wheels, look nice but not a MK2 finish. The sexy ones are going on before I flog em! (would look awesome on a black MK1 to give it the total finish)

I was cleaning out my garage this afternoon and I have so much crap!

x3 MK2 Bonnets
1 box of MK2 Headlights (about 5 sets)
Several inner spot lights
1 box of assorted relays (about 30)
plenty of plastic trims
1 pair of front drop glass (green tint) for a 2 door golf
1 brand new fog lamp bracket
1 crystal fog lamp
1 insurance approved drivers side wing
1 set of Mini Cooper 17" wheels to fit a MK2 Golf and 1 set of run flat tyres (with 3mm tread)
1 ladies bicycle
A pair of Audi 100 headlights
1 Rallye headlight
1 Rallye Slam panel
1 Golf slampanel
1 GTi Grill
1 MK2 GTi Dashboard
1 box of door rubbers
3 sets of GTi Mats
2 front seats out of the 88 GTi (Project Red Demon)

And that is why I can't fit the bloody car in the garage!  :undecided:

But on a plus note, I will be put a load of it on eBay so I can buy parts for Red Demon.

Got a set of 17" for now but it's getting the 14" Audi wheels. Then some RA's that I will play with.

Next, fit the exhaust and work out why the battery keeps draining  :undecided:
Choice of K&N panel filter or cone filter, not sure yet.

Yeah that's why I said it was a shame they had to go... If he did some of his refurb skillz on them he could have coloured the center parts maybe the same as the audi wheels and just left the dishes chrome.   Mind you if he did that i'd probably want them off him then!

Today I managed to get the wheels on (due to not having paint in stock to sort out a Seat Leon Cupra)

Whilst putting these on the car I was thinking what to do engine wise. And I think a big bore and leary cam is the way to go. I want to keep it '8v ish' but want more grunt from it. Any suggestions, obviously costs need to be low for minor changes but once the money is good again who knows where this could go? :smug:

Wheels look tidy.   when tyres need replacing, get some 45s on it and slam it  :lipsrsealed:

it's amazing what you can get out of an 8v.... My head is almost as old as the car but was still pushing nearly 140BHP with Bigger valves, high lift cam etc...  when i think it's setup OK again I will be curious as to what its still got left in although the tappets are sounding a little tired now.  typical mk1.

Maybe the issue is that the background isn't normally the same colour as the text, perhaps try painting the background and spaces the same colour of the car?

Yeah, was going to do that but could not be arsed to mess around with it. I will paint them all black I think, just looks better.

Took it out for a drive this afternoon and the difference is definatley noticeable in the ride since the Konis have been fitted. My interior looks great too. These old GTi's certainly have bags of offer still eh. Lovin it!

Well, the Audi wheels are moving on to pasteurs new so the RA's will be sitting on her for a while (as they are in a scuffed state!). Still, I think it looks good despite this. I shall be refurbing them in silver for the standard look.

Smooth gears, nice bit of torque through the gears and plenty of fun through round a bouts. More driving tomorrow, Thursday and Friday then she will go Saturday.

Yeah it is if the 405 is in a bad state, the one I went in had it's engine from a crashed 405 so was totally justified and to be honest, the motor seemed to really suit the little 205.
