Title: Silly small, naff, winter wheel time!
Post by: Ess_Three on 07 November 2010, 16:25
...or maybe not!

But I have put my winter wheels on

8" x 18" BBS CHs with 225/40/18 Vredestein Wintrac Extremes on:

The 19" Goodyears were really struggling with the temperatures regularly getting below 6 degrees - it was frosty this morning - so these bad boys will be on for the next 5 months or so.

I can set to and have the 19" VW Racing wheels powder coated in preperation for next summer now.

You'll have to be careful on those tyres, what with them not being a premium brand and all.......

Exactly my thoughts, gossa.
However, Ess_Three's car is well flapped.

That's OK gossa, I prefer my own expreiences, and the experiences of those who ran Vredesteins through last winter, over perceived brand placement or magazine test results on a completely different car.

Neil says they are the dogs...he was right with the Goodyears...I have no reason to thing he'll have got these badly off the mark.

I'll take my chances!

Maybe it's the flaps that stop my car wheelspinning in 3rd, in the dry?

It's a hard call, but I'll get over it.

BTW: The wheels look good on a red car.

Is there a bit of stretch with those tyres? Or is that just the design of the tyre itself?

There shouldn't be...a 225 on an 8.0" wide wheel sit's square...
My summer wheels are 8.5" wide and they are just off square...or square, but with no rim protector available, if you like.

On these, the rim protector does at least cover the rim.
you can just see it here:

Of course they are not. Imagine Ess_Three stretching his rubber. Heaven forbid.

Why thank you Asker...

I fitted two last week, then took them off because I didn't take to the colour.
I was over at the powder-coaters looking to see what else there was, when I spotted the owners Mk5 R32 in red, with the standard wheels done in the same anthracite colour coating....and liked it.
So on they went today.

I think the VWR wheels will end up the same colour.

Nice one asker! Ess_Three, i think it was the rim protection i was looking at sorry, suppose it makes sense to have quite a bit of extra rubber on winter tyres, just in case you slide in to a curb

Smaller diameter wheels with bigger sidewalls would offer more protection, for sure and narrower tyres wil be better in deep snow...but since I have decided to stick to 18" wheels, I have planned for the eventuality of bending one:

I have 4 spares!

Only 2 sets for me...one set of those are the ones on the car.
4 sets of BBS RXIIs for the Mk3 though...
And 2 sets of 19" VW Racing wheels for the Mk6!

I'm a wheel whore...I need help.

He intends to come down to London, riding hot-shot on his Verdesteins in order to flog and then hang me!

Those BBS wheels look stunning......... to be cheeky I would say they look much better than the VMR's imo

The finish of the wheels blends very nicely with the cars exterior plastic parts. Those are the best wheels I've seen to date on a red GTI.

p.s. and two bloody sets is just being greedy

I prefer the VMR's VWR Fleshpoint wheels, but that's MO!
What do I know eh?

Mine are not VMRs...
They are VW Racings 'Flashpoint' wheels.

I have considered lookinhg for a set of 19" BBS CHs for summer though...

I stand corrected :embarassed:

Out of interest how did you manage to come by two identical sets of BBS CH's?

No problem...I just wouldn't want to be taking credit for having VMRs when I don't!

I have contacts at VW Racing who offered me a set of CHs at a decent price...and being mindful of the fact that I may kerb one, so liking to keep at least one 'spare' in the same finish, I managed to convince them to let me have a second set too.

Then, just a tidy up, a fresh powder-coat in the same batch to make sure the finish is identical...and job done!

^ Love it..... however, buying two sets of identical wheels would only end up in divorce for me.
