hi,
ive had my black golf for about 3 years now, ive done a few modifications to it like alloy wheels, lowered suspencion, tinted windows, VW sports spoiler and all the sound system an a few other little things, but i quite fancy doing something with the engine. a lot of people said there is not much i can do with a 2.0 and would be better off selling mine and buying a 1.8 turbo. i would just like to ask what type of options i had? and what different things i could do. do u think i could do a strate swap for a similar year 1.8 turbo? or have i got different options? thanks
jack

I doubt you would be able to straight swap unless the 1.8T was on it's last legs. To convert the engine would be lots and as yours is n/a, it would be more money to get yours to the same power as a standard 1.8t than it would to buy one. They're definitely worth a few weeks saving to put money towards. You could be lucky and find someone under 21 whose renewal has gone through the roof but still wants a mk4 and have a swap

better of buying a 1.8t then engine swapping it mate as loads expense and time
plus 1.8t's seem to have dropped in price a bit maybe becuase xmas is around the corner and petrol prices are starting shoot up again
-
well id have no problem swapping it an putting money towards it but whats the best way to find someone willing to do the trade? i first thought about dropping an R32 engine in my 2.0.. then someone told me what was involved and how much it would cost and how stupid it would be haha
-
and if i wer to look for a 1.8 terbo.. is there a cirtain one that u can get the most out of modifieing it?
-
agu = more reliable but less able to tune
aum = bigger turbo easier to tune but more sensors so more problems.. same insurance group tho
Cheaper ones are always the AGU engined ones as they older..

The engine isnt completely useless.
You have a few options to play with, improving the air flow will definitely help and a remap will make the car run better.
In my opinion you've got a few options,
1.
DSG intake,
Uprated cams,
Miltek exhaust,
remap.
2.
Supercharge. Yes there is a supercharger you can get for the 2.0L 8v engine, gains will be significant but the kit is roughly £1000 and on top of that is the labour and a custom remap. Mk3 2.0L 8v engine owners can shed some light on the supercharger but if you use the search function and look for one of mine or rhyso or various other peoples posts theres some fantastic write-ups and links to other threads and forums.
3.
Engine conversion. Insurance will rocket, tax will stay the same but you'll then have the joys of a faster engine (probably best just to buy a 1.8 20vT) But saying that at some stage i'm going to be looking at a engine conversion because i dont want to get rid of my car lol a donor car would be your best bet for a conversion if possible
at the moment i'm going for option 1 but possibly an LPG conversion to get better MPG. Would love to be going for option 3 but £££ just says no haha

Sell it and buy a turbo, no point with s/h prices in building what you can buy.

Very true.

thanks for all the ideas, the supercharger is a good idea. im like u, dont wanna loose the car because the outside and inside are just how i want it haha. but saw a nice anniversary 2.8 turbo 16v for 8 grand and for the ammount ive spent doing mine up i might just put it off the road an buy the anniversary.. once ive got the cash lol. im not too clued up on much to do with engines.. at all infact, so how would i find a good reasonable place near by that i could ask to give me the ideas on what too do too it to tune it up to perfection? would there be a forum for business like that?

What's an anni 2.8 16v turbo!?
-
Could you not get a set of throttle bodies on it and a stand alone ecu....
get the head ported and polished, cams ect..
I had a set of WEBER bodies on a 2.0 ZETEC mondeo, and boy did it go...
I think it cost about 2k to do and sort out.....
Or go for NOS alot cheaper, but it runs out

Just thinking the same. :undecided:
-
obviously i ment 1.8 lol pressed 2 by mistake, nos is a good idea, its just the same again, finding someone who i could ask to get the car running perfectly then introduce a nos kit.. i wouldnt know where to start or who to ask :/ lol

Ah a 1.8 20 valve

This seems like a sensible option without going too much into engine swaps, supercharging modification etc. A tubular manifold would also help with the breathing of the engine and a hi-flo cat.
BHP gains may not be outstanding, but will be enough for you to notice the difference and not get bored too quickley.
