well if you want to be anal about it if you read an mot test manual if you take the bumper off and there is sharp edges its still ok... unmanufactured sharp edges due to corrosion or damage are not. so if the manufacterer made it sharp regardless if it was covered up or not its fine crazy aint it

doesnt suit the mk2
-
I believe there is also an issue with the bumper being a structural component. Something to do with the front subframe iirc.

oh well
anyone got any ideas for something a little different, corrado bumpers or something
im tottaly up for chopping and glassing stuff
-
Er, no.
It has been done before. Generically, it looks shit without any kind of compromise.
Mk2's are a model of car, that does not take well to any kind of aftermarket bodging.
either big or small bumpers, or maybe some chrome ones. Nowt else.
-
loud and clear i did wonder why everyone is keeping it stock, what bumpers is Chris using in his banner,
mk2 big bumpers?
-

If you trim off the bumper irons so there aren't any sharp edges and bolt them back in you could run bumperless. You'll need to find somewhere to locate the indicators, but you could easily use Land Rover items screwed to the front of the car.
It is the bumper irons that are structural, not the actual bumper itself.
As has been noted you'll need the front valance from a small bumper car, so you don't have a gaping hole at the front of the car.
I don't think the rears have any structural role either, but you might like to plate over the holes that are left, or fit a filler to the remaining bumper iron, so it fits snugly in the hole that's left. There will also be a few brackets left which will need removing and then the fixing holes would need welding/filling up.
Go for it, it'd be good to see something that different.

Small bumpers ftw.
-
as mr hell says you can chop the front irons off and bolt them into place. i did this with mine to drive it to and from the bodyshop.

thanks for the Positve comments,
now lets think, the front velance from a mk1 should in width be about an inch smaller, i forget the difference in size, how much wider did they make the mk1 to the mk2?
well if i could not bodge because i dont do those, but maybe do it properly then it should look alright, then i can have an exposed oil cooler like some of those minis you see.
i could use metro headlights as the indicators are next to the lamp, or maybe some mini clubman items because they are 7 inches.
sorry i came from the mini scene :P
-
oh wait did you say small bumper car, as in golf mk2 small bumpers, mines a gti lookalike :( previous owner, i dont know alot about golfs yet. anyway mine has small bumpers already, so do i have a front valance? or a hole? i havent looked yet. got no tools at the moment
-
When I come and have a look we can brainstorm :)
Could fabricate one based on the original supports to keep its integrity:)
That would be something new!
-
i have been making negative countor moulds for my plywood furniture the same could work for that, all i need is some plasterscene coragated cardboard and gafatape
i love it when a plan comes together
in all seriousness i will have a look at the car in a sec and then see whats going on
-
How about a scirocco mk1/2 bumper?
Would it fit?
-
we need to go to a scrappy, me thinks lol
