Just realised my reverse lights are not working. Checked the bulb and fuse and both are ok. My Haynes manual refers to an electrical connection on the gearbox but i can't find it. By the way its a 1990 8v gti. Any feedback would be really helpful.

Find your speedo cable and follow it down to the top of the gearbox. You'll see a switch very close to it...........thats it. There are 2 types. if you're lucky, yours will be the 2 spade connectors and one has come off.

Seems i am not that lucky! :'(
I followed the speedo cable down to the gearbox and sure enough there was an electrical two spade plug attached to the top of the gearbox. The connection was fine.
Do you know what else this could be? Is there something inside the gearbox that is failing? (Hope not).
Any ideas?

Try disconnecting the 2 leads and carrying out a continuity test on the switch. The switches do fail, but fortunately are quite cheap to replace:-

Thanks 'Forum God'. I will give it a test. :)

As mr rich said above it is more than not the switch that has gone, just to make doubly sure, Pull the two spade terminals off and join them together with an opened up paper clip, lights work, knackered switch.
