Title: Engine coolant
Post by: emery1990 on 06 November 2010, 13:54
Is the likes of g12 coolant just normal anti freeze ? Is it oil based, reason I ask is because when filling up solar panels with glycol which is antifreeze, ive always got some left and need to fill up my coolant, so could I just use this, as its its just anti freeze. Or is g12 and other anti freeze products made more engines ? This is stuff is like £1 a litre rather than the £12 /l of g12!

ermmm, still not convinced, id be more worried about the water pump than the engine, as the engine is a big lump of metal.

nothing special about it really, most antifreeze will do same job. just a case of dont match incompatible types, mix g11 blue and g12 red and it turns to brown sluge. G12+ and ++ purple are formulated to mix with both.  if you want i can piccy the back of a bottle so you know whats in em. main thing is car antifreeze has anti-corrosion inhibitors in em, your special panel stuff may not.  car engines use a mix of metals where your panels might be all the same stuff in the coolant channels
