Title: seized bolts...
Post by: Jimmy Filth on 05 November 2010, 10:47
Fitting coillies to my mk3 I have come across a problem.  The two bolts at the bottom of the coilover on the front seem to be totally seized.  any suggestions on the best way to get round this?

Soak them in wd40, if not your may need to heat them or even cut them out and replace them with new.

They're soaking in WD40 as we speak.  I don't really want to have to cut them out and order new ones.

I've ordered new bolts, but they're still stuck in.  Saying that I'm at my parents and have no tools, and didn't get a chance to do anything today.  Tomorrow I will be heating them to see if that helps, and if no luck I will angle grind them off.

I've already used the worlds deficit of WD40 and GT85 on them....

Yeah, that's them.  I've managed to get one out on the drivers side, but both on the passenger side and one on the driver's side are still stuck in

Haha, if you know anyone, let me know.  I borrowed a battery powered one, but had no luck with it.  I may resort to grenades.

As much as I'd love to, I've got the top nuts off, and one on the drivers side, don't fancy driving for three hours in this state. haha.

The lucky lucky people have gone to Aus for a month, so I'm house sitting for them as they've got a cat.

Alright for some.  Unfortunately I have no tools here at all, apart for a socket set.  haha

Unless you mean where do they live?  In that case, just outside of Chelmsford, Essex.

wd40 isnt going to help, unless the bolts are wet ;)
use a proper penetrating oil such as plus gas

I was in a motor place earlier today buying supplies and mentioned to the guy in there about my problem and he suggested a can of stuff that freezes the nuts, which makes them contract and breaks the rust and such, I suppose does the polar opposite (pardon the pun) of heating them up.

He reckons he has used it loads and has never found anything it won't loosen off.  I think it's by loctite and costs £10.99

Ok, with nothing but brute force and ignorance (and a new breaker bar + a lot of heat) I managed to get the nuts loosened and off.  Cheers for the advice everyone.

Haha, that's ok, they're off, that's the important thing.  It was a lovely learning experience.

Incidentally, My car literally kicked me on the face today.  I was removing the rear drivers side suspension.  Undid the nuts in the top blah blah blah; undoing the bottom nut and POW.  The nut pops out, the hub flicks up and slams me square on the nose.

It hurt, but mostly it was funny.
