Hi, i'v recently bought a Mk4 golf GTI with the AUM engine, while the engine was idling the other day i noticed a rattling from underneath the rocker cover, i took the rocker cover off an noticed it has two plastic cam covers which i thought were rattling on the rockercover so i removed these but the noise is still there. The rattling also seems to come and go which led me to think it may be a blocked oil jet so i'v just flushed the engine, has anyone else had this problem or can anyone shead any light on what else could be causing this noise?????

cam chain
-
just took the rockcover off an inspected the cam chain seems good

Could be timing chain tensioner does the sound go away when you blip the throttle?
-
The engine doesn't make the noise all the time but ye when it is it goes when you give it a little rev then comes back again, is the tensioner for the chain hydrolic??? cause when i had a look the other day it didn't look adjustable???
-
I think it's hydrolic not sure tho I've got the same noise on my car getting the tensioner change over the weekend

It sounds the same as mine bud.......Some muppet hadnt been servicing it properly.....mine turned out to be the oil pick up pipe in the sump....£8 from the stealers... (make sure you get the O ring as well)
Get the car the car on a ramp or stands drop the sump and undo the 2 bolts that hold the pick up pipe on
Some of the bolts that hold the sump on are a pain in the butt to get out....You will need a set of allen keys and some RTV sealent....

Thanks for the advice will get on to changing that oil pick up this week, let us know if you have any joy once you v had a look at the tensioner to mate mine seemed to be fine but if you notice anythin with yours could easily cheak mine to cure the rattle.
