I've got a mk3 gti 8v and im thinking of changing to the mk2 16v in the early part of next year, i will have about 2k to spend and was wondering if i cant find a decent mileage one, would a high flyer do!? Im pretty sure you guys can help me out here !
-
It depends how high milage. Eventually the rings will go. If its had rings done and regular services I shouldn't see y not. In my opinion the valvers are bullet proof.

well 100 thousand plus i think maybe be even up to 150 ...

100k is low mileage

Mines done 159,000 and still feels as tight as a drum.
It has only had one previous owner, and he bought it new when he was 40, so I guess it being looked after goes a long way.
-
159! i like the sounds of that haha! i guess it doesnt really matter then . btw dude i am drooling over yours  its exactly what im after .

Mines got 176k and still has the original engine and is a seriously rapid car and dosnt smoke or complain at all,it gets an oil service every 6 months no matter what the milage and gets a new cambelt every 40k and has nothing but optimax put in it,if you look after it it will look after you
-
Wow man! I've just got the task of finding one with a service history now :undecided:! I always look after my cars but it's what's happened to it before is what's the problem. Maybe finding one with a rebuilt motor in?
-
If it has been well looked after, miles are not really a issue.
-
Buy on body. You can always replace the engine with minimal fuss.

16v's are good for between 50k and 250k ive had a 220k engine that was in better condition internaly than a 55k one that had been mistreated. if it pulls well and dosent smoke all is good. engines come out and go in mucheasyer than bodywork repair sections
-
My mates did 250K before the head gasket gave out he must have done a further 10K on it before the engine completely died becuase @ 240K I said don't drive it, there is water on the oil cap. He wasn't bothered as he had a 2.0 PG waiting for me to install. So the bastard drove it till it siezed up! just to show if he had got that rebuilt it could have gone further with head skiming and new gasket!
It never smoked either

£2k should be plenty for something decent that needs a bit of work, but try to buy before the spring rush to get the best deals. As already suggested, buy on the condition of the shell - everything else is replaceable (including bolt on body panels, though these are getting harder to source in decent condition). Make sure you do a HPI (there's a cheap one now - checkmycar or something?), look out for accident damage and spend some time reading all the paperwork from the car. A good set of paperwork will give you an insight into a car's history and may tell you of any major works that have been done on it.
As mentioned, engines tend to be pretty robust, but beware of the gearboxes - these tend to develop problems after about 150k if not looked after.
-
I have a J plate valver. 168K and still going strong. As said, buy on bodywork. Engine repair or replacement is both easy and inexpensive.

cheers guys for all the help, and past experience's you have been able to provide me with . In PVW there is a company that does fully rekoned engines (minus the ancilaries) for about 6 or 7 hundered pounds i think.. so i will look into a replacement unit if the chassis is all okay but the engine is on its way out. Are there any common mk2 faults i should be looking for? like common rusting points!?...
