Make your own lighting loom, I did and probably one of the best modification you can do.  Use at least two relays for the lighting circuit, one for each dipped beam.

I've got the same problem, they're pants on dipped beam and alrite ish on main, think I'm jus guna chuck an h.I.d kit on it save messin about with the loom, easier and prob better (haven't seen uprated - only hid)

i got one of the ebay kits in the garage untouched if you want it let me know, it needs altering as the guy on ebay sends them out wired for the VW Corrado, its easy to change using the guide shown in the link above, kit only has the one relay but i got one installed on my car and seams to work fine

This would make you a c*nt and your car illegal, please do not buy one and buy an uprated kit instead, which will be much better, not result in beam scatter, as your lights are designed for a filament bulb (not an HID burner) and prevent you from being the sort of c*nt who drives around dazzling other drivers arrogantly thinking they're clever because they've uprated their headlights using an illegally fitted HID kit.

He's saying don't fit HIDs. They were never intended for a MK2.

HIDs dont give a proper beam pattern when fitted to headlights which werent designed for them. such as your golf.

it will most likely fail the MOT on poor beam image (scatters the light too much)

If u wanna rewire ur loom then fair enough- but it won't be original!! Ill be stickin in the hids myself and dazzling u all cos I'm a cu*t ha

I hope you get knicked with 'em fitted as they are Sh1te when fitted...

There is a TW4T that has a set fitted near where my son lives (White MK2) and his fecking HIDs blinds every other road user....

Not only a c*nt, but an ignorant c*nt at that.

If u wanna rewire ur loom then fair enough- but it won't be original!!

I think you have me confused with someone who gives a damn about originality, although as you haven't seen an uprated kit you won't know that they can plug in to the original loom.

Maybe you should go back to driving a Saxo or whatever turd you crawled out of when you got a VW?  I think it might suit your chav-scum attitude better.

As much as I am laughing at work (and trying not to) please do refrain from such explicits boys and girls.

HIDs are illegal and quite rightly people will slate you for it (open forums work as such). However, it is your choice so do what you please. Just don't complain when you get pulled for it.

Other than that, any more and I'll exercise my padlock finger (it hasn't been used in a while - must be getting old)

Is this not negated as Rallyes have projectors on them? I ask because projectors would focus the beam.

People with illegally fitted HIDs annoy me to a visceral level. It goes hand in hand with the attitude of not giving a monkeys about anyone else; which is permeating more and more through this society.

I don't see the point in them, to be honest. Even in those big ass pointless Land Rover-esque cars, as their beam patterns are higher than other cars making it near impossible to see anything.

Just get better bulbs surely, rather than inconveniencing, and potentially endangering, others?
Title: Re: Brighter headlights???
Post by: X4MGS on 01 November 2010, 16:36
I fitted HIDs to my Audi S2 and they were a vast improvement... BUT they have Epislode/Projector Lamps... After fitting them and seeing how good they were - they were the 1st thing on the list for the Mk2...

UNTIL I found out that they are infact illegal.... So the idea got dropped...

I have now fitted uprated Xeon bulbs which are much better than stock bulbs & I don't go round blinding other drivers or have problems when it come to test time!!

true the Xenons were classed as early Hid's due to the gas charge, I was worried the first time I went for MOT, but he looked at the Rallye log book and passed it due to it having low Hid's on already. But the whole Audi TT projector lense was used so kinda broke some rules, but got away with it due to that loop hole?
The breaking the law bit is the motion motor that usually comes with HID's so if you go up a hill they automatically adjust so not to blind people as long as you have this in theory its legal  :nerd:

I'll see your nerding and raise it.

The only thing that makes the HID kits illegal is that they're behind lenses designed for filament bulbs, not an HID burner.  The auto-levelling and head-lamp washer that the UK law specifies is superceded by EU law, which states just the glass needs to be E-marked for the application.

Jus to clear this up I was quickly called a cu*t for suggesting em. I get dazzled by every new car in the mk2, can't see nout on back roads when on dipped with traffic passing, need to get the mains on asap! If u can't beat em join em I say.unless every1 does away with their hid's its silly to be different and suffer and moan, hids are clearly better- that's y they're commonly used I guess..like I say I know of a few mk2s that have aftermarket hids, they never get flashed 4 dazzling people, never fail mots, never get stopped by the fuzz, and don't really have any probs at all! Win win if u ask me!! Its an opinion based question- no right or wrong answer. Let's have it rite u cud put a quad headlamp grille on and have pukka lites!! No offence intended I appreciate varied answers wen I ask a q..

PMSL....

Just cos your M8's dont get flashed or pulled don't mean it's right...

As I said there is a MK2 near where my lad lives and he has HIDs and they do blind you...

It's also about having respect for other road users..

Do the Loom Upgrade and you'll notice a big differance you can also take the lamps off and cleann them.

Or even buy new HELLA ones for £20.00 each from BBT's

honestly making an uprated loom (which plugs into the existing loom and saves your chopping the original up) isnt very difficult. Shouldnt cost you any more than £25 to make a dipped/main loom:

2x relays,
2x fuse holders,
wire,
spade connectors,
ring connectors,
2x H4 lamp plugs,
solder,
heat shrink,
electrical tape

With a bit of patience and common sense you'd finish it within 4-6 hours at a gentle pace. i did mine over 3 evenings watching TV, and i didnt have a clue  :lipsrsealed: but it helps to draw a diagram based on the matey-matey guide: http://www.matey-matey.com/uprated_headlight_wiring.shtml

your headlamps will get 12v and not 9v; it will make the world of difference, mine were shocking... like driving with candles!

plus you get a sense of achievement from doing it.

failing that buy a pre-made one off ebay for £40-£50. but you'd be a failure.

You really do come across like an ignorant moron.

The relay loom and good quality bulbs is the correct and legal solution, this is not an opinion, it's correct.  You seem to struggle to differentiate between empirical fact and subjective opinion.

Quite who you see as 'us' in this situation I'm not sure.

How a conversation about headlights turns into this i don't know.

I do agree that if the lights weren't designed to take HID's then don't fit them if there not going to function properly.

The chap i bought my car off fitted a set of uprated bulbs that have a blue tinge to them and seem to have a two stage process when you switch them on, first the blue then the yellowish light kicks in. Seems to work fine in my car and i live in the middle of nowhere with no street lights.

TBH Chris is spot on I had to wire a pair of real 12v to another golf it took me ten minutes the two relays can handle direct 12V to power up decent bulbs and still get the switching signal wire from the original loom. Very easy mod and much safer on the old headlights due to heat!
A bit of shrink wrap to make it clean job done!
