Title: gearbox interchange -ability ?

to cut a long story short ... i've recently bought a gearbox from a seller on ebay, the add picture showed the gearbox in the donor car with a later type clutch cable connection to the box .... when i received the box my mechanic ( with 20 years experience of gti's) said that the box sent was an earlier type box which meant it needed an earlier type clutch cable connection ... my question is are the different clutch cable connections interchangeable with earlier and later type boxes .. oh and i have an '88 8v. cheers guys.

can fit either cable t either type of box. the only difference is the thin metal rod that holds the cable steady is different. this can be unbolted and swapped over. you want the early cable anyway, its cheaper and more reliable
