Title: coilover setup
Post by: maximous on 03 February 2005, 16:18
Hi Iv just got some coilovers for the mk2 ? do you adjust the height from the arch to the hub, or from the shock bodies thread to the lock ring?

Oh and im having some trouble getting the front struts off, before iv always used air guns, I cant find a drop headed ring spanner that will fit inside the enclosed strut tops. Are there any tricks or special spanners?

Cheers Max

I adjusted mine from the threads to the platform.

You need a special tool to undo these easily but i just used a hammer and a punch to undo them

If your changing your suspension setup then now is the time to change your front topmounts. VAG ones only!!

u need a mcphearson strut tool, halfords and the motorist centres sell them, you also need a blig allen key on the inside of the nut on the strut-top. i didnt have a ring spanner when i did mine, i found a deep socket with a hex on the end, put the allen key down the centre of the socket, and used a normal spanner on the end of the socket. you need 2 hold the allen key still and un-do the outside nut. hey-presto!

Excellent ill take a trip down to Halfords then, I think the close at 7:30. Things are so much easier when you have a compressor. Should coilovers come without dust covers? - are they needed?

Do you mean them round covers? I dont think it will do any harm without them.

Cover the whole coilover with some protector. i used copper grease. this will save you alot of hassle later on trust me.

i just adjusted mine from the bottom of the thread to the platform. it doesn't matter where you adjust them as long as you use the same point on all four shocks to keep them level. i just wound mine down! also mine didn't have boots but are plated so shouldn't rust but some kind of spray on coating is never a bad idea.
