Title: 16v Block the same as a 8V Block?

I have a 8V mk2 and have got hold of a cheap 16v complete engine, I was wondering if the blocks are the same as I was looking at overhauling the 16v block and using it at a later stage keeping my mk2 a 8V version.

16v also has piston cooling jets, 8v does not.

Nope not really on the early KR lump, you can get a conversion kit for the ABA block to take a ABF head.

the head bolts up,  pistons are not compatable

I was looking at head gaskets and the site I was looking at were sayin 8v and 16v blocks had the same head gasket

headgaskets are the same, the 1.8  8 an 16v blocks are diffrent castings.   some of the 2.0 8 and 16v blocks have a common casting but not all.  ABF and AGG are the same block but with diffrent pistons the rods also differ on some

as above gaskets are the same, it bolts right up. wont work tho as will result in low compression. ok for boost but still have to change the timing belt sprockets, intermediate shafdt, oil pump and dizzy blanking plate/oil pump upper bearing assy.  may still need to cut the piston head a little to avoid valve clash, not 100% on that.

basically, short answer is either way you try it, no.

you really should notch the pistons to gain accsepatable valve piston clearnance,   with some cams a head thats never been skimmed it'll work without cutouts or sometimes i'll work till you rev it.
