After replacing most of the gear linkage bushes my gear change is still extremely notchy. After some investigation i noticed that the arm going into the gearbox is the culprit, the one that the linkage connects to. Would changing the gear oil help?

car?

Sorry. 8 v digi mk 2. Crap description i know but dunno what you call that bit. If i move it by hand its quite notchy.
-
gear oil is worth a try, redline mtl is recommended. not sure it will help you though :(
-
Changing the gear oil nearly always makes for an improvement, it may not solve your problem though.
-
Ok its worth a go. Any idea what it could be? Is my gearbox on its way out?
-
thats pretty much all it could be, you might be able to fix it by replacing the selector on top of the box, but its hard to say without a better idea of what the problem is

Ill post a pic up later of what part i mean

oh for phuck sake, i dont even know how to draw a ring round it on the pic.
The rod and arm at the top of the picture on the right which the linkage connects to is what i mean. I moved it by hand and pushed the rod in and out the box and it isnt a smooth operation like i ve noticed on other golfs. Its not undrivable but a lot of the time i have to let the clutch up with my hand against the stick to get 1st gear. I ve changed evrything that was worn on the linkage but left the big orange bush alone because i didnt have an alignment tool.

yeah thats the selector. can change the selector unit (http://www.brokevw.com) thats about it for easy things. if that doesnt help box needs to be stripped down to look at it inside
