Title: Just got my dream motor :-) **UPDATED**
Post by: Deano2711 on 27 October 2010, 21:23
Have just got home after viewing and buying my dream car.....a Dragon Green VR6. Always fancied one and was delighted to do the deal and am glad to see the back of my Mark 4 to be honest. Bodywork is very clean with one scratch about 2/3 inches long. Engine runs as sweet as a nut with no nasty noises or leaks or blowing smoke etc. Interior is spotless throughout. Plans are to put the original wheels off my 8v on this along with the smoked indicators and joeyed lights. Then not much else really except enjoy it   Going to give it a damn good clean the weekend. Excuse the pics but these are from the e.bay advert as it's too dark to take pics of my own yet

Nice one mate! Always wanted a vr6 myself. Whats goin on with the steering wheel on that one? Did you just message the guy on ebay and ask for a swap then? Good luck with it mate, bet you'll get bored of your 8v now!

Hi Buddy.....saw the ad on the bay and dropped the guy a text late last night. Spoke to him today and went to view after work. A really nice chap but limited knowledge of the car. Spent about 2 hours looking around it and driving it and took the plunge.
As for the 8v Mate....after driving this home I am seriously tempted to put it up for sale after swapping over the few bits I want on the new one. Not sure yet as the 8v has sentimental value to me and would make me cry to see someone drive it away    Always knew the Mark 4 would come in handy for something though Mate.  Wanna buy the 8v ??

Keep the 8v mate, keep it mint, undercover or summat?! Is the VR6 loads quicker? Damn, I want one now that Ive seen this.

What bits are you swapping anyway? Im hoping the steering wheel and rear lights for a start.

Wheels, smoked indicators and joeyed headlights. Don't want to completely break up the 8v. The rear lights actually look nice on the motor in the flesh and are staying for now  As for the steering wheel.....I will find a replacement first as I don't want the standard wheel in there as it will not really match the rest of the interior so for now that stays until I find something else I like.
I am not convinced I need to sell the 8v but it's a shame to leave it sitting on the drive all the time although if the fuel consumption in the VR is too high then the 8v will be the works car and the vr for weekend.....who knows ??

That sounds like the best idea! You get to keep the 8v for doing the daily things as it was intended and keep the VR as something a bit more special!

Looks ace mate, nice buy, engine looks spotless. So, tell us, what's it like compared to the 8v? will the 8v beat it thanks to it's torque?

I dunno mate, when i first got my 8v after driving an escort  :lipsrsealed: for a while I was wheel spinning out of every junction! I was surprised about how easily it did it, got embarassing after a bit! I think Ive tamed the beast now though. :lipsrsealed:

Cheers for the comments and I am looking forward to using this as my daily. Always fancied a Dragon Green VR6. And Daz....not sure on the drop but it is low. The front splitter has been removed by the previous owner due to the speed humps by him but will be back on this weekend. I don't fancy Black wheels but will be transferring the bbs vr6 alloys off my 8v onto this to make it look better.

Well have spent a large chunk of the weekend swapping over the alloys between the VR and the 8v. Took the four wheels off the GTI and swapped with the VR wheels....got to the last wheel on the VR and two wheel nuts were locked solid, bent two standard wheel braces, snapped a ratchet, bent a bar, snapped a breaker bar and eventually after two and a half hours managed to get them off !!! Swapped over the deep splitter, bonnet struts and the interior stuff. Decided against the lights as the smoked indicators I have have no fogs and I don't want to remove the fogs from the VR. Anyway, just cleaned it up and here are some better pics.

This car was sitting in my ebay watch list. Was intending on bidding for it.

Looks better now you've swapped the wheels over. The wheels were the only thing that put me off on ebay.

Is a smart looking motor though.

Sorry about that Buddy....went to view it Wednesday night and bought it back home with me.  At least your sorted now Mate    You can just about see in the second pic that I put the other alloys on my 8v.

Thats ok. I got what I wanted. couldve done without the six hour train journey to get it mind you. One day on public transport was more than enough to encourage me to slow down and keep my licence.

Are you going to sell the 8v or wait and see how much time your spending at the pumps first.

I had an L plate vr about seven years ago. Couldnt afford the ins back then but with careful driving (picking your moments to embarrass much newer cars) it wasnt too bad on fuel.

I am thinking of selling it but it has sentimental value to me. I owned the car a few years back and regretted selling it. Then a few months back it came up for sale in a bit of a sorry state so I bought it back and got it looking loads better again. It has faults but I love the car to bits and think if I sell I will regret it again but then again I don't see the point in having it sitting on the drive all the time.  Who knows ??

Looks spot on.

However I think it would look better with standard rear lights and if it was sitting a little higher on the rear.

Those old wheels were standard fit on CC and later highlines.

I did think they were CC wheels but wasn't completely sure. As for the lights I am not usually a big fan of these but they look loads better in the flesh.

Heritage Classic Car insurance....quotes available online until you mention mods    They use a place in Birmingham called Norton Insurance.  I have the VR and the 8v insured through them at less than half the cost I was paying before. The more limited your mileage the cheaper the premium.....happy days.

Defo worth the upgrade Mate but as with any new car you expect teething problems but mine is being evil at the moment and I ain't happy   Had more problems in 1 day on the VR than in all 4 of my previous GTI's. Will be well worth it when sorted I suppose  :undecided:

Cheers Buddy....not trying to hide anything it's just that I had sent the PM before I read the post on this thread. Basically the heater pipe at the top of the engine acquired a hole and pissed all the water out the system while I was at work. Cut out the hole and re applied the pipe and topped up with water/anti freeze before starting the car. Massaged the pipes etc to remove air and eft the car idling to reach temp. No probs but about a mile up the road the temp guage shot up so called out the RAC. He came out and filled up and did the same as me and followed me home with no probs so I am now going to flush out the system this afternoon when I get home.
But also and the bigger of my worries is that the fuse for the electric windows had popped so this morning I popped in a 10 amp fuse and they worked fine. Went to check the water level before going to work and returned to the cab to find the fuse melting and smoke from the dash....so quickly turned off igniton and pulled what was left of the fuse. Looks like a dash out job for me which I could do without and I am not the best with electrics but I guess I am looking for two wires touching or something ??  Any ideas or suggestions welcomed and I make a mean brew for anyone that want's to help

Thanks for the offer Mate but I am unsure about whether to look myself or take it to a garage. It seemed to be from around the centre colsole area so may be able to just remove heater controls etc.  As for the 8v Mate....it's already on the Bay and I just cannot watch it sit on the drive and rot away. Rather someone else enjoyed it like I have. I decided not to post it up on here as it has faults and don't want anyone to think I am trying to rip them off.  If it makes enough money on the bay it will go. I can still drive the VR at the moment but plan to have a good look this afternoon as I have the afternoon off. If I don't have any success then it will go to the garage I think. Many thanks for the offer though Mate....when do you go back to work then ??

Post by: Deano2711 on 07 November 2010, 09:54
Well I spent most of the day yesterday trying to find out why the dashboard was smoking.  Took out the glovebox and the heater controls to find no damage to the wiring. As this is where the smoking occured this seemed the place to look. However, just as I was about to start putting the heater controls back I noticed a thin live wire behind the dash with the end cut off. Traced it back to the passenger side of the dash where to my horror I found a carrier bag full of old wiring. Quite a few of these were from an old Nokia hands free kit and another load for an old alarm that had been disconnected. Began the task of removing these wires to find that they were all still connected to the battery and about four were still live and very crudely cut to remove. Took them all out and now just have to replace the fuse box as slot 14 melted when the smoking occured (unless someone local to me wants to have a go at wiring in an inline fuse for me ). So the search begins for a fuse box and hopefully this will resolve the problemand get me my eleccy windows back

Had the car in the garage today for the wiring repairs. Had the two burnt out wires replaced, fuse box sorted and repaired, immobiliser removed properly, sub and amp wired in and all electrics tested. All this for the princely sum of £165 plus the vat. Car is now back and running very well so life is good again
