some were glued on. Mine was. I tapped it with a light hammer and chisel and it broke off. Go steady now

how old is your fuel filter? changed mine yesterday and has improved the running loads.

Hi,everybody.it used to every so often hold back but after 100 yards or worse case a mile,it would clear itself, this could happen once a week or maybe once a month.

back in July my coil went,,and the rac put a new one on,,all was well until a week after it held back

i left the car for two weeks ,drove up road and its holding back continuely,

i have owned the car from 85k to 125k and i dont think the fuel filter has been changed, its looks like a difficult job as i imagine been under the car.

mmmm what engine is it? i found on my AEX the issue i had all along with random cutting out and loss of power and odd revs was caused by the unit in the intake manifold. dont knwo what it was but i replaced it and its totally fixed now :)
before i did that i went through coil, dizzy leads, filters, vagcom, the works ...

Holding back?

Hmmm sounds like ECU relay to me!

Thanks for the pointers.

if i blast it ,it will rev out,but just wont cruise at mid revs,,sort of holding back and jerking.

starts as normal, slightly rough tick over,,i can just about get some where at 30 mph..so using my bike for transport at moment,,and its a bit cold !!

Hi,can anybody give any help/pointers (1997 2l 16v abf)

slightly rough idle...(in neutral)holding revs about 2.5rpm feels slightly lumpy.

when you the drive car it kangeroos ,jerks at about 2.5k to 3k rpm.

i have changed plugs,rotor arm,dis cap,plug leads.the vacuum pipes i could see,cleaned throttle body,
stripped airbox to check for nests.

next i will possibly change fuel filter

i have read on here to check ecu relay and fuel pump relay,,where are these,,do they have a number.

is it true by disconnecting the battery the ecu resets itself ??

any advice would be much appreciated, thank you in advance

ECU relay is no.30 and Fuel pump is no.167.   Might be worth having a compression test done to rule out any "physical" problems if you see what I mean (head gasket, valve seats etc).

I would check the grounds to the ECU, body, engine etc.  Any smoke from the exhaust?  Does it get better hot or cold?

Would also consider changing these in this order - and one by one (to see what fixes it):
-> coolant temp sensor
-> fuel filter
-> lamda (oxygen) sensor.  Does it have a MAF (airflow) sensor on the air intake?

See how you get on and let us know,

hi James,,many thanks for the reply.I spoke to an old friend today who works at VW HQ and used to be a VW mechanic and he suggested the water temp sensor (which you suggested too).

He described the location and that it is held in by a "horse shoe" type clip. Unfortunately i cannot find it.On the right side of the block there is a water pipe with what looks like round bung held in by a horse shoe clip, but it is flat on top and no wires attached.

Where is the water temp sensor located ??

i phoned up dealer and they have sensor in stock at £28 ,does this sound right.

Thanks again for any help given

hi james..

my car is a 1997  Golf GTI 2.0 litre 16 valve (sticker on cambelt cover indicates its an ABF)

that shows an 8 valve engine so things are in different places.

still cant find the temp sensor

thanks

oh, ok I *think* that the 16v sensor is on the right hand side of the block.

Anybody with a 16v want to help a bit here???

You described that and thats where I'd say it was:

I had a similar issue in which everyone gave great pointers:

Out of interest have you tried the new relay 30 and 167? Worth doing if it hasn't been done

Hi,,looked at that photo,,that is where mine has a blank.the blank is a proper thing and has vw markings on it.

i assume on 1997 abf  vw decided to relocate temp sensor

by the way the temp gauge on my car has always performed normally (5 years)

There is a brass thing screwed into battery side of radiator (the wiring is linked to fan ?)

There are some sensers directly above the oil filter ?

Thanks leon/james

>There is a brass thing screwed into battery side of radiator (the wiring is linked to fan ?)
thats the fan switch

>There are some sensers directly above the oil filter ?
probably oil temp/pressure sensors

>by the way the temp gauge on my car has always performed normally (5 years)
indeed.  these do fail occasionally.  There are also two sensors in the one block so possibly the dash has been ok, but its the ECU one thats gone wibble.

Perhaps you could post a photo of yours?  Confused.

hi,so have located fan switch, temp gauge sender.

still cant find temp sensor but have ordered one so we will see better when it arrives.

my car is a 1997 and it looks like vw have revised the location ,

i can see where it would normally go,but mine has a proper fitting bung.hence no wires attached

my spark plugs are sooty indicating it is running rich

i will report back with any more updates

thanks

on a 16v the sensor is screwed directly into the side of the head. there are 2 there, the black single pin one is for the dash, the white 2 pin one is for the ecu (well, its supposed to be white, might be dirty brown now )

the blank you mention is where the aircon temp sensor would go on a/c equipped models :)

Post by: tenere on 19 November 2010, 10:40
Well i dont have air con ,so that would explain the blank,

i can see the other two sensors that are screwed into the block,

The part should be here today, fingers crossed

hi ,water temp sensor was fitted to side of block with white block connector (as stated by rubjonny)

Changed this today ,,still the same,, the garage next door has done some checks and they are now convinced that the head gasket is the culprit.so i have left them to change it ,,they are good guys ,so i hope i will get my car back soon and all will be ok.

its been a expensive month, new discs and pads all round, water pump, all the belts, plugs, leads, cap and arm ,,and tax mot and insurance.

good job i am very fond of my golf
