Hoping to save £2k between now and the end of May to buy a new car.
Got my eyes on the 2.0 Bora Sport, should be able to get one for a bit under £2k but what else do people recommend? What would you buy for that money?
-
What sort of mileage do you do? Those 2.0 8v MKIV's are hella thirsty.
Nick
-
Hmm, 2500 a year max!
-
I'd still avoid the 2.0 engine
1.8T's are silly cheap these days; keep an eye out for one of them
-
What about the MK4 1.4 S Golf?
or a 1.6 Bora?

1.4 burns oil / eats gearboxes
1.6 is slow
-
for the love of god don't get any 2.0 golf unless its a 16v mk3. if you want a mk4 golf then you have to get the 1.8T or a derv.
-
Does it have to be a family car??? If so then why not look at a older style (B5 shape) Audi A4 tdi, good refinments, nice looking, strong engines and quiet quick with a remap  or if it doesnt then you should have a look at the polo or ibiza tdi as they are quiet good too? There are plenty of options, you have sometime to look around as you are saving so just keep your eyes peeled and i am sure there will be something good. What are you looking to do to the car?? i.e mod or keep stock?
-
as said above 2.0 8v mk4 a real no no and they even worse when you only do short trips..
-
Bora or Golf TDi?
Less don't get and more "do get" lol. Not sure a 1.8T is group 7 or lower insurance, saying that the Bora TDi is group 8 iirc.
-
1.8t is group 14 or the 180bhp is group 16 i believe..
-
2 grand to spend and very low miles?
a really nice mk2 is the only choice for me unless modernity is a concern.
-
If you haven't had a Corrado then £2k should net you a pretty damned tidy 2.0 16V version.
If you haven't had one I'd recommend it. Very little in the VW portfolio feels as special, or such an occasion when you drive it. If you're only doing 2500 miles per year you want the miles you drive to feel special and in the Corrado they will.
-
A corrado is something I hadn't thought of. I do love the look of them and I think it's a massive shame they didn't take off! A nice dark green one with some BBS wheels would do me nicely. Will look in to that!
-
2.0 8v any good? A bit less power so should be better on insurance? (115bhp to the 16vs 136bhp)
Edit: eff me group 17!!!!

AFAIK all raddo's are group 17 regardless of engine.

I think you should buy a 02 plate 1.8T
It just so happens i got 1 for sale with new style 18" RS4
Only problem price is £2200
-
Does really need to be insurance group 7 or below which limits options on power. TBH if I could afford up to group 17 I'd get a V5 Bora.
Thinking Bora TDi now, but do they sound like tractors?
-
Well that really depends on if the engine has been well looked after. If it has then they dont really sound like tractors. Do you really like the Bora's?? As you can pick up a mk4 golf tdi or Audi tdi for about the same price?
-
I do like the MK4 Golf too, but they don't really stick out anymore as there are so many of them on the road. I think it's between the MK4 and the Bora and I'm thinking Bora!
Wouldn't mind an Audi really, are we talking A3?
-
Bora's are cheaper spec for spec than Golf's as well.
My mum is currently rolling in my Dad's old 130 TDI Bora that's clocked 190K and it still runs like a dream.

Bora's do seem a lot of car for the money, and the tax+economy is appealing too....
-
Might be the same but different, but how about a Jetta? Love them, especially the Mk2. Either that or perhaps a bigger engined Lupo?

Well A3 is a good option and you could pick one up for that sort of price but you said that you dont really want a mk4 golf as they dont really stick out anymore and i think this is the same for the A3, this is why i suggested the A4, you get a hell of equipment and toys and with some nice mods look fantastic.
This is my A4 tdi (V reg) Not gone over the top with the mods but does turn heads and yet now on 240k, just shows how strong they are and yet got all the toys a modern car has, just something to think about.

Boras are lovely motors especially if you can get a specced up Highline though you'll struggle to get one at £2k. They tend to have much more equipment than the equivalent Golf and are more exclusive. They look good too.
A lot of them are ex-fleet cars which have been serviced well throughout their dull lives. A well-looked after diesel should see intergalactic mileages with a little tlc. As with the Golf they're easy to mod if you want.
Here's a couple I found:

Not sure on that autotrader one mate but the eBay one looks lovely.
If I do get a Bora, I think it HAS to be a sport tbh, because they're such a nicer place to be than any lower spec.

Surely parkers is f*cked? Bora 4 Motion Group 34?? What does it even go up to? 21 or something??

Insurance companies have internal codes for groups that go up to 70 I believe. We only started using them just before I was made redundant. 4 motion is group 17 in "old money" iirc

There's a new ratings system been brought in recently to replace the old 1-20 system.

Oh thats handy.... lol. I'm wondering if there's a table somewhere on the net that shows equivalents to the "old fashioned" 1-20 system?

I'm looking for something insurance group 7 or lower really mate. Want my insurance down not up. And tbh this new insurance group 1-50 has f*cked me up. Don't understand it at all so now I'm really stuck!
Would love a 2.0 Bora..... For all the tax I'd pay etc and it might even be over budget on insurance, they're a lot of car for the money and even though tax is high, I'd pay it!!! Especially for a sport trim one. The interioir is nice, it's quick, and it's just a lot of car for the money. A well looked after high miler would do me for under £2k

but there not quick, there heavy and underpowered, 1.8t is the one to go for, quicker as standard and a lot more tuning options
