Hey guys, just a few questions that I need answering...
I got my golf bout a month ago now. Paid £280 on flebay!! Proper bargain!! 2.0 8v 135k on the clock! It always seemed slightly low on power, gave it some new oil n sparks n it seemed to respond quite well, but still slacking. I've never been in another mk3 8v gti so I dunno if it's just me bein picky.
The car drinks petrol like a binge drinker out on a all weekend bender!! It runs rich!! It's got an induction kit on it (which I'm taking off don't worry!) took it on a 100 mile round trip down th m11 and m25 my average mpg was.... Wait for it.... Wait..... 24.5 mpg!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!! I refuse to believe that an induction kit refuses efficiency by that much! Advise on what that could be please?!
The next thing was the revs, at 70mph I'm sittin at @ 3200 rpm, 80 @ 4000 rpm and a ton+ is almost touching the red! It's that normal? Again I don't know cos I ain't been in another 8v. It just seems a bit high to me...
The final thing is when I bought it the previous owner said that the clutch was slipping... I ain't experienced any problems and I've ragged the nuts of it trying to find out if it's slipping! Would clutch problems contribute the the high revving?
Cheers guys, any advise is appreciated!

Hi there, welcome..
I'm sure you'll hear lots of jibes about the power of the ole 8valve.. it's not exactly slow..it's just not particularly fast either..plenty of pros and cons from the guys though,
Fuel consuption should be better really, probably wants a good service and setting up.
There's some items to look at like cleaning the throttle body and water temp sensor that could count for your poor mpg..amongst other things..
Do some searches ok..you'll soon see what things to check.
If i remember rightly 70 on mine is a frac under 3000rpm, in top gear of course!.. completely standard 8v, rims/tyres etc

What year is it, in fitting the induction kit the last owner did not bin the maf sensor did they.
Your revs sound about right, from memory @ 70 mine was just over 3k.
-
The maf is there but if it works is a different question!
How would I clean the throttle body? What about modified/ polished throttle bodies? Has anyone done that b4?
I'm thinking get a standard box, cold air feed to it and check the maf that shud sort that out!
-
Standard airbox good idea, at least you'll get back to square one and know where you stand mpg wise..then make any changes from there,
Do a search 'throttle body cleaning' or similar..there'll be loads of info.. but the throttle body (top back of rocker cover) you need to get into each side of the butterfly valve and clean in there with carb cleaner until shiny new again..
-
Iv just Replaced the original air box and filter and took it for a spin...
Still no good! However my mpg is going between 22 and 23 mpg from running around town and on the motorway. I just don't understand!

change the coolant temp sensor.
-
Coolant temp sensor? How comes?
-
Because it determines how much fuel goes in. If the sensor is faulty it will run with the same map as when the car is cold, which is heavy on fuel until it warms up.
-
When the coolant sensor is faulty, the ecu usually uses a set 80 degrees.
The sensor could still fool the ecu that it is still working, so its worth changing.
-
I getcha! Wer is the sensor to be able to change it?
-
in the coolant flange on the front of the head, 4 pin one. go to vw pattern sensors are cack
-
I have the baby 8V and it drinks fuel like its going outta fashion, my hubbys Scooby is more fuel efficient  and i was quite disapointed in the lack of power.
-
disconnect the lambda probe plug, if that helps you need a new one. mk3 8v is always gonna feel slow compared to a scooby
they arnt that quick as only 115bhp in a heavy car. gearing isnt as sporty as a mk2 either. they arnt THAT slow though, all relative really
-
Would a corrado be quicker??? or maybe the vr6?
-
Would a corrado be quicker??? or maybe the vr6?
Anything is quicker than an 8v!
Try a good 16v!
Yes a Vr6 will be a lot quicker. As for a Corrado - Yes.
-
lol awww the poor 8v,ive just had some new tyres and an exhaust so ill make use outta them for a bit b4 i sell it.
-
Hey guys, I think your all right! The coolant temperature gauge on my clocks stopped workin the other day, obviously a sensor has gone somewer in the coolant system!
Apparently there's more then 1 sensor though... Could someone please tell me where they all ate so I can replace them all!!

like i say, its the 4 pin one in the front coolant flange on the head ;)
follow the top radiator hose to the head, plastic bit is the flange. sensor is in the top, held in with a clip. wait till engien is stone cold before you swap it, and remove header tank cap and refit to release any residual pressure. it should have an oring on the bottom, so make sure you swap this over from the old sensor, or if you get a new oring make sure you remove the old one if it got stuck in the flange :)
-
Well I got a new señsor...........
My coolent temperature shows up just fine on the dials no problem. It just now decides to over heat and start to steam!! WTF!!!!
Gettin pissed with it now... 14mpg, I live like 2 miles from work so quarter of a tank goes in days. May trade in n get a Saxo
Just jokin!!

Still problems with this one eh,
As you've tried the obvious coolant sensor rout with no joy probably best now go back to basics and follow rubjonny's link, otherwise you could be chucking money at it without any results,
If it was me i'd start over with a complete coolant drain/flush/replace stat anyway..not an expensive job but a good thing to get done.
MissG, if your a boy ra' ..i mean girl racer  then you probably want a 16v in some other form at least, other than that stick with it, if serviced and set up right the 8v is a tractable user friendly day to day car.
Your mpg is way too low, if you get that sorted it'll help put the 8v ownership in some perspective anyway,
-
Well guys, cheers for all the answers and links. This car is like banging my head agains a very hard wall!!
I've done as follows,
1: changed induction kit for standard air box,
2: changed air flow sensor, then back (cos the original was in better condition!)
3: cleaned throttle body,
4; changed coolant sensor and done complete coolant change to go with.
Iv sorted out the problems with it cutting out however the original problem of poor mpg is still a worry, and starting to burn a hole in my pocket!!
Thinking mayb thermostat? Any other possibilities?
Also clutch is on it's way out so will need to start saving!
-
Typical sign of a duff thermostat is running cool when on the move, then at a standstill temp rises to normal 90%, temp lowering again once on the move.. if this is the case then def get stat replaced, it won't make a significant difference on your mpg though, it didn't when i did mine but it has to improve efficiency overall.
Some other things must be adding to your poor mpg..Fuel & Ecu relays could be the next things to look at, no 30 & 167, just replace them if you have any doubts, about a tenner each.
Have you checked all the breathers/vacuum lines..
Plugs..
Static timing (distributor rotor position at TDC)
What's the condition of your exhaust system!? An 8v, although not exactly fast should feel nippy and flighty for normal lower rev range driving, if it feels sluggish requiring heavy gas pedal all the time to get it moving then it might point to something blowing..that resulting in your mpg going south'
-
Tbh the whole car prob needs replacing lol!
Well I always thought the sluggish low down response was the clutch. Wen u put ur foot down the revs go up quick but I'm still sort of sitting there! Just don't seem as quick as it shud b. I also know for sure that it is defo lacking power. but u mayb right, cos my cat does have a funny noise, kind of echos. Guessing it wud b the cat/ lambda sensor that's gone to pot to effect mpg?
-
It should be obvious if your clutch is slipping but yes if you suspect the exhaust system in any way then that's where i'd look, amongst the other things mentioned..
If you think the car is basically sound but wants setting up/fix problems etc then you need to eliminate and fix the items you can as you go rather than speculate on everything..
If as you jest it's a bit of a heap maybe then think about getting rid..not the best advise i know but, only you know
-
I actually want to keep it! That's the thing! A mate of mine has got vag com software so just gobs hook it up n see if there r n e errors n address them 1st. Then see what that turns out.
As for the clutch. The previous owner said it needed doing. It's got the slight oil leak from the gearbox on the drive way. The engine revs a lil bit higher then normal. When u put ur foot down the revs go up really quick but the car doesn't accelerate as quick as it should. Real crap torq low down which is unusual for a 8v... It may not b slipping but i think it's on it's way out.
