Just wanted to ask other DSG owners if their gearbox behaves the same as mine. In 'D' at slow speeds it will stay in 2nd until pretty much at a standstill. Sometimes you can even feel it slipping the clutch to remain in 2nd. In 'M' it will grab first once the revs are pretty low / you're at creeping pace. I find this annoying, as say you're going to turn into a side road and slow down to make the turn, you would normally want to be in 2nd gear. In 'D' this is fine and unless you come to a complete stop in will hold 2nd. However in 'M' in will sometimes grab first and you pull off faster / rev'ier than is required.
You can test this if you're creeping in traffic (say off the brake but with no throttle). In 'D' it's in 2nd, knock it over to manually and it drops to first.. Knock it back to 'D' and it'll take 2nd again! Slipping the clutch if it needs to, unless you come to a total stop and it will drop to first.
I want 'M' to behave like 'D' in this regard.. Has anyone else observed the same behaviour with their DSG box?

That is why a fully manual hand job always wins over an automatic or semi-automatic one.

If you want to decide which gear you're in you need a manual.
Otherwise the car decides.

Or put it in Manual and then you decide

However in 'M' in will sometimes grab first and you pull off faster / rev'ier than is required.
When in "M", mine only changes into first if the engine is going to stall so haven't seen this problem.

Cheers Mike - I'm not sure it's a problem though, really seems to be a 'behaviour'. I'd love to try another one to compare. Could you try what I suggested maybe next time you're creeping along (no throttle)? Switch between 'D' and 'M' and see if it will stay in 2nd gear in 'M'?

Nutkins, I just tried it on the way home and it is the same as yours but only sometimes, flicking back from M to D it sometimes picks 2nd in D but then if I accelerate slightly and then let it slow to a crawl it seems to stay in 1st.
Maybe it depends on the way it is driven as the DSG is supposed to adapt to your driving style.

Thanks Mike - it certainly feels like it's doing it 'by design'. At times you can really feel it slipping the clutch to stay in 2nd gear.. Only does it in D though. In M it definitely drops to 1st a lot sooner. Only at very low revs, but it doesn't do the clutch slip certainly.

I drove a MK5 DSG for five years before the MK6 and there are definitely some differences in the programming of the box.
In the MK5 when in 'D' you wouldn't notice the down changes when coming to a stop, the MK6 still seems to blip the throttle.
'D' mode was a lot more relaxed in the MK5, in the MK6 it is nearly like a half sport mode.
The down changes when driving enthusiastically are much faster in the MK6.
Still love it and don't think I could ever go back to a standard manual.

give the car back.
i did

I noticed simular things with my DSG...it was a completely different setting compared to my previous GTI...
I learned to live with it....but after a while unexpected salvation came...."the remap"....as a bonus a much better DSG setting...awesome

Here in The Netherlands a lot of GTi drivers let JD Engeneering modify the DSG software, is that an option in England for you guys?

there is a number of companies that offer a dsg remap. apparently it improves the dsg box to exactly as it should have been out of the factory.
Strange how people said the dsg box was perfect before the remap and then even more perfect after  go figure that!!

this is exactly the reason why many whom have tried the dsg gave it back wanting to be back in a manual. moi included!

This problem was only noted when driving at a crawl and moving the box between M and D continually, not exactly a problem.
Any small niggles far outweigh the advantages and the enjoyment I get from it.
Having to drive manual hire cars when on business I do find them rather boring now but as said on another of the "DSG vs Manual" threads people who bought DSG love them and people who have manuals love them that's why they made the choice in the first place.

It's not a question of continually moving it back between M and D, that's just an easy way to illustrate the 'feature'. I do think it's by design though definitely, although won't know for sure until I can drive another one.. But mine certainly does its upmost to stay in 2nd gear in 'D', even crawling slowly up a hill you can feel it slipping the clutch at times to stay in 2nd. In 'D' in drops into first a lot sooner.
However I agree with Mike I think it's a great box. I've only ever had manuals and would never have considered an 'auto' previously. And although it would be nice to have the *option* of a manual from time to time for fun, on a day to day basis (when you're tired and just want to get home for example) it just makes so much more sense. It's also just as rewarding I find, although maybe in a different way, using the stick / paddles in manual mode. I certainly don't miss having a clutch, flicking through a nice manual box, yes, sometimes.. But not having a clutch is great!

log it on the DSG problems site, that no-one needs to use apparently.....
