Managed to get a very good deal on one of these today at Bluewater (Weekend only special) so went for the 1000d and the 18-55mm IS lens.
Had a quick play on auto and manual and it's very comfortable and simple to use, and I'm looking forward to getting a SD card in there and getting out and taking some photos.
Seen this card on play.com, is it ideal? I'll be shooting high quality & RAW photos.

Now let's look at whatother goodies I can buy!
-
Brilliant choice of camera.
I started off with that lens combo and I love my camera completely. There is a lot of camera snobbery I have found with quite a few people with the higher spec ones claiming that the 1000D isn't as good a camera as theirs but in my opinion it's an excellent piece of kit. If you go on to this website http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM (http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM) you can see that the quality of the pictures it produces really aren't that far off the higher spec cameras.
I now have a Sigma AF 70-300mm f4-5.6 lens and a 'nifty fifty' Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II as well as my 18-55mm lens, which I think's a nice round selection of lenses. Have my heart set on the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens but need to save up some fundage at the moment.
The card I got for mine is an 8gb Kingston SD HC Class 6, which was about £15 quid I think, but it is a brilliant card. I've taken many pics in RAW and barely filled the thing up.
(I miss Bluewater )

Thanks, just got the one lense at the moment but want a longer zoom lense in the not so far future but I'll make so with what I've got now.
Came across the deal on Friday and debated getting it, then decided to go and get it this morning.
The nifty fifty sound interesting, what are they useful for? Portraits? Would love a macro lense but they seem to be big money.
-
It's brilliant for low light photography. You don't have a zoom which takes a wee while to get used to I have to admit but I wouldn't be without this lens at all now. Probably one of the best low price lenses out there.
They are big money for the macros but they're so good lol.
-
nifty fifty is a 'must' have canon lens imo for the money which is about £80 its one of my most used lens! becuase its a fixed lens the images are so crisp its awesome
im on my second one as the first broke from well prob over use hahah but its great, welcome to another slippery slope!
-
So what should be on my xmas present list?
So far I've decided on:
-a nice case
-Canon Remote Switch (worth the money?)
-Polarising filter
Tripod (suggestion please not too expensive!)
And the Nifty Fifty Lense
Anymore must buys?
-
what sort of things you going to be / wanting to shoot?
for cheaper items things like filters etc would be good, spare batt and memory cards, then other things to consider are flash guns etc :)
-
Shooting wildlife, pets, landscapes with the water so close, cars etc. So a bit of everything.
Can't wait till my memory card comes through then I can start playing for real!
-
Remote shutter releases are always handy, I wouldn't bother (from personal experience) with proper Canon ones though. I just bought cheapo ebay ones for both the 400D and the 50D and they work perfectly.

Got a link?
-
-Canon Remote Switch (worth the money?)
no, get one from amazon or ebay I paid about £30 for my Nikon copy vs £100 for the genuine
Tripod (suggestion please not too expensive!)
Here you want to spend a few quid as it's like a car what's the point of having a fast car and rubbish tyres? A decent tripod is there to support your camera, to prevent shake and give you a stable platform a cheap one wont do this as well as a decent one these http://www.redsnapperuk.com/ are considered good value, www.giottos-tripods.co.uk offer a better value range than manfrotto (what I use) have a read through http://www.bythom.com/support.htm
Also if you're planning landscape, wildlife and pet photos you'll probably want a hydrostatic head and an L-Clamp (might be one for further down the line).
Other things you'll probably want
ND filter(s) for landscape with water shots
ND Grad filters for landscape shots
If you're taking pet photos a blower and lens pen (good stocking fillers ) some sort of lens protection, a UV filter will give you around 1/3 of a stop less light but will stop your lens being scratched up.
A flash Nissin or Metz offer a good equivalent.

Another vote for the 50mm prime.
It's epic and full of goodness.
-
Thanks for the replies people.
That redsnapper is the kind of price range I was after :afro: So i'll bear that in mind. The 50mm lens is definitely on my shopping list and I'll look into the other filters.
Was hoping my memory card would be here today but it's not so no shooting for me today. :(
-
yean as said ebay triggers remote think my wireless remote wasnt even £30 but a great bit of kit :)
-
Got a link Stinky one?
-
i dont mate but i just searched for wireless remote for canon400D and there are a few websites besides ebay you can get them dude :)
-
The one I use on the 50D is made by Yongnuo (who also make decent cheapo flash units). I think it was about £10 from ebay. For what it cost it's actually a pretty well made bit of kit! I guess they probably do shutter releases for all Canon DSLR models, can't check ebay now as I'm at work though.
-
Thanks :afro:
Still no memory card :(
-
Got a bit impatient and went and bought another memory card (so now I'll have a backup as well :afro: )
Few test shots on Flickr

None of these have been edited and are straight out of the camera including the monochrome one.

-
Good piccies!
Kittehs are gooorgeous!! Want!

Was looking at getting this camera, how are you getting on with it? What did you pay for yours?
-
I paid £320 with the IS lens, from jessops as the store had been revamped they knocked £50 off selected items. I haven't seen it less than £350 anywhere else.
I'm loving the camera, does everything I need to. Take a look at my flicker by clicking on one of the pictures I have put in the photography thread. Bear in mind you may new to spend another £50 on a bag, card and other accessories (not essential apart from the card)
Any more questions fire away.

Thanks for that I the one I looked at today was £350.00 which is about as much as I want to spend, plus get myself a good sized memory card. Will check the Jessops near me see what their price is. Nice collection of pics you got there.
-
Cheers mate. The promo only run at 1 store for 2 days as far as I know. I'm using a Transcend 8GB Class 6(or 10) can't remember from play.com for 10 pound and it's nice and quick. 350 seems average price with the IS lens. Not sure about the non-IS lens to be honest.
If you're after a bag check out amazon for the Lowepro Rezo 160 (IIRC) for 22 pound.
-
Thanks for the advice, probably won't get this until Christmas but its good to be clear on the bits I need. Thanks again.
-
I've really been looking at getting a new camera lately, and think that your pics have made me decide to wait and get one of these. Seems like an awesome camera for the price! Was looking at getting a non DSLR but this is only about £100 more than the others i've been looking at, so seems like it would be a better choice
Has it been easy to get used to?
-
Very easy, you can run it in full auto if you want. But when you understand how things work the other modes are great (I like using manual for trial and error) it is user friendly. You really can't go wrong.
-
Awesome thanks dude
Had a play with a 450d i think it was about a year ago, so sort of know what DSLR's offer, so hopefully can pick it up quite easily when i get round to getting one :)
Thanks!
