£265 each ouch. iirc i paid ~£300 for a set of 17" GTI alloys + ~£150 each for Vredestein tyres so ~£900 £160 cheeper than these tyres alone eek
You'd be cheaper and safer buying a second car for really bad weather :wink:
:wink: I did that too for the deep snow. If i smash the front end of the £1K car with new winter tyres into a snow bank trying to get back into the street i won't care ( I did that last year and it acted like a ramp!), but the low front end of the mk6 is a bit scary for winter use. I will use the mk6 when its clearish and light covering when the snow starts to build up its into the sh!tsu.

Don't want to sit in a cheapish car just for the weather. I feel this is the best solution for me.
Don't think it is that expensive IMO. It is equivalent to six very good meals for two in a top London restaurant :lipsrsealed:

The dunlop ones are not bad either its whats on sh!tsu. But i had to have the sexy ones for the golf. :grin:
I pinched Neils photo as mines in the garage and he takes a far better photo than me anyway. :cool:

Im more worried in winter about the ability of other drivers rather than my car and my ability which is why in bad snow conditions i use sh!tsu as im less worried of someone hitting me then as most people panic and have no clue how to drive anymore in snow. I shout alot in the car at other drivers in the winter :grin: :embarassed:

I just want those Michelin PA3 tyres so badly. I hate the Bridgestones. They don't even grip in the dry. Utter rubbish.
No point re-mapping a car if the tyres do not grip. I'll post pictures once I empty my wallet again! :rolleyes:

You must have money to burn paying over a grand for tyres you don't really need in this country [If you did it would only be for a few weeks a year] The Michelin Pilot Sport 3 for example are only about £150 each, and are easily able to cope with almost anything within reason in this country. I've never bought winter tyres for a car yet, if it gets really bad I won't use the car.

the idea was the bridgestones are on the 17" monzas... so a little lighter with more tread for the winter months. This way it also doesnt really matter if you slide into a kerb. Although it hasnt happend to me yet, there are plenty of other fools out there to aviod :huh:

The reason I am going for all weather tyres is, I had a terrible time last winter with B'Stones on my Type R. I could not even mount a gentle ramp in the car park. So embarrassing. Never again. I also had a terrible time driving on the Continent. They were all over the place and I felt such a fool. Got some strange looks!

Must admit I am worried about damaging my 18" Monza's, not just from skidding into a kerb, but also from all the grit and salt. Although I do wax them regularly so they are well protected.

Summer tyres componds are only designed to work above about 7 degrees and thats there minimum not optimum so there well below par at that stage. Having winter or all season tyres makes a big difference in the cold and wet not just snow.

i got a tyre fitter friend come out to change my wheels over.. and we were talking about winter tyres. In his opinion, he said its usually better to just deflate the tyre a little when it snows heavy. When there is ice you are fecked no matter what tyres you use... and it is usually ice that causes the bangs!
He has recently (well last year) ended up changing quite a few winter tyres due to damage.

cant see that vid for some reason. but most of us are just trying to make progress in bad weather as opposed to pushing boundaries. I have always done ok on summer tyres. Take it slow and use momentum. Even with the R32, and something that all 4x4 drivers need to learn is 4x4 = more traction, not more grip. Usually becuase they are heavier its them that slide into stuff!

Actually, you evil, wicked, Crash Bandit, I do make it over 20 mph for 2/3 of my driving.

Interesting reading. Seems from above, the Conti Sportcontact 2 and the Pirelli PZero
Nero come out tops. They are also the two quietest tyres.

Just about to buy my 17" winter tyres, as the price of them is going up daily. Can someone help please:
91 or 94 rating?
H or V rated?
So confusing :shocked: I think I need to order 225/45 17R 94V, but would an H rating do? (130mph max for H, 149mph max V) or would insurance use it as a cop out if I had an accident?
94 load rating, only because they seem the same price as a 91 load rating, or am I missing something? Help :shocked:

Get the V rated ones.
Only one W rated Winter Tyre and that is the Michelin Alpin Pilot PA3 at £265 fitted!

I've been looking at the mytyres.co.uk link that was discussed last winter. Their 16" steel wheel plus vredesteins works out at under 600, so is very appealing. Did anyone opt for this? are 16" wheels really big enough?

If you value proper winter performance over looks, yes.
My old man runs 16" wheels on his Golf...there are many advantages on dropping to 16" wheels...the only real downside is looks.

All weather tyres are jack of all trades, mastrer on none.
They are not as good as a proper 'winter' tyre in the cold and not as good as a high performance 'summer' biased tyre in summer.
You cannot make a tyre with a compound and tread pattern optimised for 30+ degreec C dry days, and -10 degrees in snow.
It's not possible.
Do yourself a favour...if you NEED winter grip, get winter tyres.
Run winter tyres in the cold, and summer tyres when it's not. It's a far better solution than living with a tyre that's not very good at anything.

Winter tyres in winter = superb.
Winter tyres in summer = awful.
Summer tyres in summer = superb.
Summer tryes in winter = awful.

I think spending over a grand on tyres is stupid (if they're summer tyres then no, but winter tyres yes IMO).
Winter tyres are only REALLY needed for places like canada, russia and other countries which spend half a year buried under snow. I think you're better off with a good set of summer tyres with plenty of thread and taking it easy when the weather gets bad, I just can't justify a grand on tyres...It's money to burn that.

+1. Hitting at 30 mph or more will result in hitting something, be it a winter tyre or summer tyre.

I won't be buying winter rubber for use in the South and as I don't have the slightest inclination to visit the Northern Wastes by way of road, my expediture can now be targeted towards something more useful for use in the South.

For you, I can see this as a sensible thing.
Your roads are cleared, gritted, and you may see snow - or temperatures well below zero - for a handful of days per winter...hardly worth it.
The difference in cost saved by not buying winter weels/tyres can be used to get about by other means, if the weather is that bad.

If you live in rural areas, oop north - or heavens forbid, on the barely cultured side of Hadrian's wall...you may well see the benefits of winter tyres. If you'd tried them, you would know.
I came back onshore last Wednesday to snow. The temperature was below 5 degrees for 4 days...and at 4.5 degrees, Goodyear's finest were shocking...no grip...lots of wheelspin, lots of ESP activation, lots of ABS activation.
Hence, I have taken my BBS CHs with winter tyres down from my wheel rack, and will be fitting them soon.
In areas where roads don't get gritted, where there are no motorways, and light traffic, you need them if you want to go about your business through the winter.
I failed to have winter tyres for 1 out of the last 8 winters..and that one year I had to rely on lifts from people with cars on suitable rubber to get about. Not good.
If you don't get the weather, you don't need winter tyres...but spend 4 months+ below 7 degrees C (often below zero degrees C)
and you'll see the benefit.
Try them, and converted you will be.

Completely agree with Ess_Three on this one. Winters get quite nasty in NE England as well (North of Necastle for me) and our council is terrible for not gritting roads adequately. Given anticipated council spending cuts it's odds on road gritting will not be high on their agenda. Mine getting bought tonight and fitted next week.
I'm swapping 17" Monzas for 17" VW Exis STP alloys I got brand new for a song. Insurance said originally £34 additional premium until I stressed they were a VW option wheel at which point they said no charge. Waiting for this in writing though as I'd rather pay the £34 than be uninsured

The temperatures round here didn't go above that magic seven until March this year. Then they reverted and we had a white Easter to match the white Christmas that had dragged on well into the new year. I didn't mind the three days work I lost, but not being able to get mother to the carol concert three days before the worst hit was a bit of a bummer.
The clocks haven't changed yet, but we've had hard frost already. My temperature readout has pinged for frost on the drive home several times already. One local garage has a big ad for winter tyres on the door.
Prospero says he wants a service in 500 miles. I'm seriously considering getting him a set of winter tyres at the same time. I mean, he can only wear one set at a time. Wearing a winter set will extend the time before a new summer set has to be purchased.

I am glad this thread has highlighted the importance of using correct tyres in the winter and summer months, but especially in the winter and cold weather conditions (7 degrees centigrade and below).
Best to be safe, take all reasonable precautions, than be sorry. You cannot put a price on safety.
I will definitely have shod Wolfgang with winter footwear as and when I deem it necessary.
As I don't have a garage, I have made tentative arrangements with a Tyre Fitting Company very close to my home who will wrap and store my summer wheels + tyres if and when I purchase my winter ones from them. This is a service they offer to all their 'winter' customers.

I intend to purchase a set of winter alloys with vredsteins this week.
On sunday we had thick frost followed later in the day by enormous hail stones, so I fear that winter cannot be far away.
I would rather spend a grand on a decent set of winter treads than spend 2 or 3 having trashed my car through a hedge back or worse.

In certain countries like Germany, if your car isn't shod with winter tyres and you have an accident below a set temperature, your insurance is void. The fact they (and other) European countries put so much emphasis on the use of winter tyres speaks volumes.
A grand on winter tyres is fine if you can afford it, but even a mid range winter tyre is better in cold conditions that a summer tyre, and they would cost significantly less

Last winter we went skiing to the italian alps, setting off from manchester. My mate had agreed to give us a lift, snowed all morning before the flight, & we tip-toed to the airport, sliding around like crazy in a audi a4 quattro. Eventually made it to milan airport, where it was also snowing heavily, took a look at our taxi, the usual merc barge with r w drive & thought oh no! The driver just smiled & muttered "snow tyre, very good" and off we went, with nothing more than a slight rear end wobble on a sliproad (no pun intendeed). I think I'm getting some this winter, and as I have a dirty great screw in one tyre atm, I think sooner rather than later.
and @R32UK, too right m8, scariest moment i had last winter was me in the r32 & a guy in a bmw x something or other sailing towards each other, both discovering 4w drive counted for very little on the ice rink formerly known as chester road! No harm done, but 2 red faces!

The most frightening thing I've ever experienced was finding out that my S3 would find great traction on snow from it's 225 wide tyres, but had 4 sledges as soon as the brakes were pressed...sometimes 4WD gives you a false sense of security!
Last winter I was scooting about in a Fabia vRS with winter tyres on, laughting at X5 owners getting stranded and slithering about all over the place.
Winter tyres in winter = epic. :smiley:

If you live in rural areas, oop north - or heavens forbid, on the barely cultured side of Hadrian's wall...you may well see the benefits of winter tyres. If you'd tried them, you would know.
I came back onshore last Wednesday to snow. The temperature was below 5 degrees for 4 days...and at 4.5 degrees, Goodyear's finest were shocking...no grip...lots of wheelspin, lots of ESP activation, lots of ABS activation.
Hence, I have taken my BBS CHs with winter tyres down from my wheel rack, and will be fitting them soon.
In areas where roads don't get gritted, where there are no motorways, and light traffic, you need them if you want to go about your business through the winter.
I failed to have winter tyres for 1 out of the last 8 winters..and that one year I had to rely on lifts from people with cars on suitable rubber to get about. Not good.
If you don't get the weather, you don't need winter tyres...but spend 4 months+ below 7 degrees C (often below zero degrees C)
and you'll see the benefit.
Try them, and converted you will be.
Glen for where you are in the country yes they a good idea and well worth fitting but I still fail to see the point in other areas.
We had one bad week of weather and that was about it.

although it is true about 4wd giving you a false sense of security over FWD/RWD.. as we all see so many times when Mr 4WD is sliding down a hill wondering why his big a$$ car isnt coming to a stop :laugh:

I may live in the north but I'm a southern softie all the same :wink:
In fact, I'm thinking of driving instead of flying to the alps next year, and snow tyres are compulsory. That taxi journey last year was a real eye opener, we were on the autostrada for 2hrs or so, and I never saw one car at the side of the road, whereas the m60 looked like a car park earlier that day....and you can guess who had more snow!

p.s. to avioid my prob's with Kwik-Fit this week........ give you car/wheels/alloys a nice wash before you attend and make sure you show the tyre fitters that there's no marks on them prior to them swapping the tyres over. Let them know any damage to the alloys will be at thier cost. Also inspect the wheels before you leave the fitters. I know you probably will any way....

I use a firm called Event Mobile, always been very happy with the care & attention side of things, but good advice all the same. These wheels will now become dedicated winter wheels, plenty of time to decide which bbs she'll be wearing in the summer :wink:

I am still trying to source these tyres but it is a pretty impossible task.
Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 225/40 R18 92W XL with rim protection ridge, GRNX - £263.40/£265.60 fitted
mytyres have removed it from their web and no other supplier can get them for 6 weeks!
I'll keep trying. :rolleyes:
