Title: Smoking issues
Post by: Mobby on 23 October 2010, 17:19
I have a golf GTTDI with a allard egr delete, forge FMIC and a brand new AFM and a Remap from R-tech performance.

Now my car smokes really bad!! black soot whenever in the boost range, soots up the back of the car. Its bloody annoying and im sure this isnt the norm for remapped tdi's. The supplier of the remap has now stopped using that map and now use a Revo map.

The two last things it could be is turbo and injectors? can injectors really make your car smoke that bad???

The fact it has a petrol backbox dosnt help keeping it off the car or causing a swirl?

I will record a video soon.

Any input would be great :-)

Injectors on the way out usually cause a diesel to look like a startled squid under acceleration. Might be worth getting them checked out. Have been telling the mrs she needs new ones on her Mondeo for ages, bloody embarrasment when you get your toe down.

It might not be the injectors, overfueling will cause it and that could be down to the map or a few other issues.

glow plugs would be the first thing to look at. quite a cheap and easy to do yourself fix

Glow plugs??   They're only used when starting the car.....

Remapped TDI's WILL smoke after a remap.  If its excessive smoke then chances are you've got a boost leak somewhere in your system

What map are you running now as you state its an R-Tech map then say they've stopped using it and put a REVO one on? R-Tech supply their own maps as well as REVO

agreed, especially if it's only started happening recently. weak pipe connections can begin to fail quite quickly after a remap.

I have got a revo remap on my golf and it deosnt smoke too bad under load. As said, sounds like a possible boost leak.

What engine you running?  I'm assuming by having a Forge FMIC fitted its the 130

Need to do some logging and view the boost and injector logs

I have a laptop but i need to download vagcom, Isit free? isit easy to use?

Im trying to get it booked in to get smoked checked at r-tech, car is on 115k so do injectors fail at that point or roundabout?

You also need the lead to connect your laptop to the car.  Genuine leads are £250 or thereabouts.  Whereabouts are you in the country? Might be worth finding a member local to you who has vagcom

PM Topher on here or if you can wait I'm sure R-Tech will do all the logging / fault finding

Did you run on the rollers when you had the car mapped?  How does the performance of the car feel? Has it gotten noticeably slower? MPG changed?

If no to the above then everything sounds normal and you'll just have to get used to the fact it smokes

For further info regarding it covering the back of your car, it's an aerodynamic feature of the car. A partial vacuum is created at the back of the car (more an area of high pressure) which helps at speed to keep the car planted.

So nowt you can do about that except get the wash mitt out a bit more frequently.

Weirdly mine never left the back end as bad as others even though I was running an Anni style exhaust.  On Adam's (discreet) and Steve's (twin pipe) it was more noticeable.  They both had spoilers on there car so would have that increased the effect?  :undecided:

To a certain extent yes, as it will increase the effect of the vacuum "wake" thus the tail of the car will have a larger vacuum pulling dirt and soot back on to it.

You will notice that mk2's were horrifically bad when it came to the boot getting covered, and they all had boot spoilers on.

I'll try and dig out a CFD image of a rough model mk2 I did, showing it's vacuum if i can.
