Title: Rear brake carrier removal help - please!
Post by: AdamR on 21 October 2010, 18:52
Hello all,

After a bit of help/some suggestions please!

Currently trying to remove the rear brake caliper carrier on my MK3 so I can get the disc rotor off and replace the wheel bearings.

I'm using the guide (http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/rearbrakes/index.htm) but the only bit that doesn't make sense is how to remove the 8mm allen key bolts (http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/rearbrakes/Dsc03061.jpg) - there is absolutely no way that technique will work!

I've had the bolt soaked in penetrating lube all afternoon, but even with a 2 foot long lever on my allen key I can't get the bolt to budge! Tried 'shocking' it by hammering the allen key but no luck... Yes, I am going the right way

Any ideas? Break out the blowtorch? Give the head of the bolt a good smack to try and shock it loose? Edit: Tried that, no luck... Allen key fitting in the bolt now looks a bit like a Torx fitting, don't think it'll be long before it's rounded out... :(

Thanks!
Adam

Mine were the same. Are you using allen sockets or an allen key? Id use a socket and extension, give it a beating so it sits nicely and use a long ratchet to get it off.

Mine were so tight they did round but I have the benefit of owning bolt grippers on a 3/8 drive. Used a long ratchet inside a long pipe and lost some skin but at least it came off

I just used a normal allen key with a bar on the end and gave it  bit of a whack :P

Thanks for the tips guys - I envisaged problems so ordered some a bolt gripper set earlier today... Using an allen key at the moment but I think an allen socket would be a good idea as you said... less flex and less 'twist'... Halfords here I come!

There's enough room to get a good swing on the rear-most bolt, but the other one located right next to the ABS sensor... how on earth did you get an extension bar in there!?

Cheers!

Hellfrauds retards had lost the key to the tool cabinet... had to buy the bog standard tool... Thought I felt the bolt loosening, but... evidently not

Irwin extractors.
They work no hassle.

I had this a month or two back and this is what I did.

Ensure you start with the lower bolt first as you risk damaging the ABS sensor.

1. If you have access to a blow torch (i used a pencil blow torch), aim the point of the blue flame into the centre of the bolt (the recessed part where the allen key fits) and keep it there for a minute or two. - This will heat the centre of the bolt up thus breaking the rusty bond between the bolt and hub.
2. Clamp some mole grips (or vice grips) as tight as you can (they really to need to be as tight as you can get them) and attempt to undo the bolt.
3. This may take a few attempts, but trust me, it works.
4. Once you have the first the bolt out, clamp the grips on to the other bolt and use the carrier to undo the bolt (i.e. move the carrier and not the grips)

You may need to replace the bolts, I replaced them with regular hex bolts as at least I can get a better bite with a socket in the future.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the walkthrough! I'm gonna grab a blowtorch later and try again with the allen key, if that fails then I'll break out the mole grips, and after that the Irwin extractor set... I WILL win  haha

Yeh, hex bolts seem a better bet especially for the 'lower' bolt (the one away from the ABS sensor)... and plenty of copper grease!

Thanks again,
Adam

I always use this, works a treat on them and also the cross head screws that hold the front discs in place that are made of cheese.
When you tw*t the end the other end twists and does striaght away.
Never failed me yet.Oldskool tools ftw!
If you want to borrow it just gimme a shout.

That tool is pretty crafty! Thanks very much for the offer but there's no room to use it... plus I battled with a blowtorch and a better allen key socket and I won  Very satisfying, if a bit of a pain in the arse!

Thanks very much for everybody's help

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I'm going to be having this problem soon (I've already tried once and backed off). The likelihood is these bolts are going to ned to be replaced once removed, so what hex type bolt would suit as replacements?

Stilsons / pipe wrench.   Job done.

You'll be lucky unless the rear beam has been removed from the car.

I've got one of these and they are good but there is nowhere near enough space to use one on the top bolt, i use heat and just kept flexing the extension bar until they cracked and came out but i'm replacing them with hex bolts for future ease of removal when i replace the rear beam with a fresh set of beam bushes.

Up on a ramp, access was fine

You could jack it up high & undo the bolts to the shocks, letting beam swing down

This is what i did last time, i also undid the exhaust backbox mounting point so i could get better access to the upper nearside bolt.
