Well, well mon ami Gilly. You had me fooled.
Yeh, we know it's not the size of the ship that counts, but the motion of the ocean. But who wants a frigate when one can have a cruiser, eh?
Really surprised you are not a size queen!

its a win win! the 17's have potenzas which are virtually brand new... so ideal for the up and coming winter months. Last thing i need is 19" delicate wheels with Goodyear F1 assyms in the wet and snow :nerd:

Put them on for Heaven's sake. They need to be used not wrapped in cotton wool. Pointless owning things if they are then classified as useless and userless.

Remap and 17"s. Must be one of the fastest GTIs around your area.

Do you notice much difference in ride between the 17" and the 19"s??

Remember the 17"s are faster, cheaper, more comfortable, cheaper tyres, less easy to kerb, stealthier and less common.

I moved from the 18" shadows to the 17" monzas... tbh when i moved up to the 18" i didnt notice any difference. However going back down to 17" they are a little less crashy on bumps, but i cant help think the 18" had more grip although I suspect this is down to tyres.

17" bridgestones
18" dunlops  :undecided:

p.s. Very quick now though

 I find it funny its the southeners complaining that the northeners have actually thought about winter (protecting there delicate alloys and using other wheels with new tyres or correct winter tyres) . It was snowing in Aberdeen earlier this week when i was there. I wait for the first snow flake to fall down south and the  place will grinds to a halt becomes a massive national emergency and scandal reported by every news channel of the carnage of the south grinding to a halt again even though you can see the tarmac!!!.

Smaller the better.
The larger the tyres, the more it becomes like a sledge.
A Ford Ka would probably be ideal in the snow.

17"s better in the winter then??
The machined lacquered alloys don't seem to like the winter elements, they can take a lot of looking after in winter months. It could be a few reasons, sudden change in temp of the wheels were the metal expands at different rates to the lacquer. Road salt, damp conditions, sitting covered in the snow etc. Summer tyres compond are not  designed to work below around 7 degrees and the tread pattern is not ideal for winter conditions.

Thats why in winter months i myself have two options. I fit winter tyres to a second set of alloys and use them on the golf.
I also have a second car which is much lighter and lower powered with narrower tyres (145x13). The second car is mostly used in the snow this meens i don't have to worry about other people on the road whos standard of winter driving does seem to be very poor nowadays. So if they hit me by sliding in the snow they hit my £1000 car which will not upset me as much as if they hit my mk6. (I use to use mini's in the winter (i never got stuck in the snow in them) but mini's are too expensive to now.) These options also meens i can push everyone else out of the works carpark and simply get in my car and drive out without any trouble with a  :smug: look

That's probably why we all need a Golf R?!
A golf R would have cost me over 10K more after discounts (I looked at the option when i nearly cancelled the GTI order)
£10K i could put towards other cars and infact have and will. I Could have a mk2 GTI and mk3 GTI to add to my collection and fully restore them for that extra  and also have a dedicated car for winter use
The R is heavy, has wide tyres, lots of torque and power all not good for snow conditions + that odd throttle/clutch contol problem or DSG.
I can hear the coments now from the 4motion people about last winter etc. But im not just using last winter as my reference i have been driving since the 80s. I know what snow is, I know how to drive in it (rare skill this in the uk) not this small amount of snow we had these last couple of years and driven through empty eery quiet centres of a main city in deep snow in past years. I have overtaken landrovers and many other 4x4s who have gotten stuck going uphills while in a mini or the sh!tsu regular in the past.

I disagree, If everything else was equal yes i would agree but its not. Experience in snow conditions has shown me correct tyres are much better and narrow tyres better still. The R32 has the problem that the tyres are too wide,  incorrect compound and tread pattern, R32s are too heavy, have too much torque. Something with narrow correct type tyres, light weight overcomes the disadvantage of been front wheel drive only and is far superior in such conditions.

Donuts, amateurs. No donuts but i do have somewere some great footage of me handbraking and driving sideways flicking it one way than the other through some S bends in a mini then the same route in a legacy turbo from around 1992 when playing on an industrial estate in the winter conditions. Which we seemed to do such antics very regular back then. We also tried this towing a sledge not a good idea for the passengers

I will have to try and find the Video tape that old fashioned tech  . Hes sliding more than anything due to the slush, (has the power off alot) he needs to do it in deeper snow with snow side banks and a narrower road with S bends much more fun. I miss playing about like that.
That video is not helping my cause like i told Asker earlier today, Our lass said as i saved 10K not getting an mk6 R/scirrocoR we should trade her car in for an R32 her hearing this video play just now and watching it has not helped.
