Title: project neg new wheels page 30
Post by: lemski on 21 October 2010, 14:56
It all started on 2nd of december when I brought my 1.6 driver. 5 doors. Loved every minut of it. To make this shorter I bought coilies, bbs's and an exhaust. Then... The top end seized I was stuck with no mk2...

Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lewis1641 on 23 October 2010, 22:23
Patina should never be forced!
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lemski on 24 October 2010, 07:26
Peej that sounds like a good idea. But I can only do the rat look on a budget.

Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lemski on 24 October 2010, 07:27
Patina???
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: Peej1981 on 24 October 2010, 08:08
That is the ++++++ side of the rat look as it doesnt cost a lot or anything to do. Like for example this look is cool http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RAT-LOOK-Mk2-GOLF-/260679291315?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3cb1b251b3
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lemski on 24 October 2010, 09:28
Yeh but am not a fan of rat at all. So I only wanted the bonnet cos everyone wouldn't believe it was a gti then
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lewis1641 on 24 October 2010, 16:43
Patina???

patina is what you get when something gets old. look at antique furniture. some is restored to perfection. some is showing its age and use. rat look (to me) is about patina, rather than forcing your car to look like a pile of junk.

pull a golf out of a barn, clean the lights and windows and stick an mot on it = rat look.

getting a decent car and stripping the paint off the bonnet < rat look
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lemski on 24 October 2010, 17:21
I see what your saying. I also agree my golf looks aged if you go round it. So I'm now going to have to think about the approach to neg in his last days
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: cняis on 24 October 2010, 17:27

Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lemski on 26 October 2010, 19:26
Nah I left 10mm clearence as I live in lincolnshire and have to 'race' through country roads everyday to college. I had my wheels pushed all the way in at the top and camber set from the bottom suspension bolt so that I could have it that low.
It took a week of trial and error to get it pewrfect on the front. Backs 135mm wound down though.

I really think we need to make a big night sky light (like out of batman) with a vw logo and Lewis under it so that when there is a vw stranded in the lincolnshire area we can just shine it and Lewis is there to save the day

I was the same.. I never planned to be doing what I am now... I bought this car as an almost minter (with plenty of hidden nasty surprises though) and now look at me... a fecking never ending story of me and my biatch! Just do whatever, there are very few haters on here regardless of what you do, just honest opinions, and like you say, its your car............. If you like it and others dont, f**k em!

So a quick update and today had Neg in the workshop to properly mount my exhaust as once again a bracket had broke so it was hanging so low it was scraping on the floor. Not a problem though as it is all mounted on now, jobs a good one. Funny thing though was the fact that when i took it into the workshop i had nearly everyone crowding around it and checking it out, even a lot of people where commenting on how good the rat bonnet was   Anyway heres a pic for those people who like updates without pics

Yesterday while I was on my way to broughton I heard a massive amout of knocking. Turns out it was my subframe hanging on by 1 bolt. Not good. Found 1 in the road though so all I needed was to put it back in to get me to a garage for a night seshion. Thanks to mr lewis I limped to the garage. And by midnite neg was ready again.
Thanks again Mr Dave Lewis.

In the top part of the lincolnshire area, we all live near sthingyhorpe, grimsby and lincoln. That would be a very good dub scene, i do think though that we would all be living single lives as we would always be going round to each other to see if we can come out to play.

I like this idea a lot and have already thought about this, i think that we should make a regular meet like once a month, however we are not allowed to start these meets until i get my log book through and able to tax my car  I also think we will need someone to be the organisor for it and be able to arrange a location for each meet and post it up on the forum 3-4 weeks before each meeting (i.e make a lincolnshire meet sticky post), think each meet should be a location of a nice pub somewhere?

Post by: lemski on 22 November 2010, 19:15
now then kiddie wings (although your probally all older than me), i have decided to put up the pictures from my incedent the other week involving a curb.
first the initial damage
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h367/lemski18/golfmk2022.jpg)
it doesnt look that bad from this angle, but what hapened to my front grille
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h367/lemski18/golfmk2026.jpg)
the back end, i spend ages sorting my exhaust and this happens
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h367/lemski18/golfmk2023.jpg)
and the front end :(
(http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h367/lemski18/golfmk2024.jpg)
now after many hours of trying to get it back straight with a hammer i decided my like and brute force would work. (sorry no picture of it back in line) however i did get one of spair bumper 3 fitted.
after all of this i still needed to tackle the exhaust> armed with a jubalee clip and the knowledge of how id fixed it last time (there no rear hanger mount btw). i had sorted it. and neg was back, minus the imndicators.

i then went to my grandads, knowing i had a small bumper indicator sat there from ages ago and my big bumper indicator was still some home in one piece.
so here is the neg as it was on that day after slaving away to get him to his fromer glory (if you can call it that)

and now for a real update, i am keeping neg but also building a mk1, i have some ideas for neg, let me no what you think.
1. comic strip wings with plastic arches back on
2. black vinyl roof
3. 14" bbs' (again but in black)
4. back to small bumpers.

cheers liam

MR JENKINGS!!!!
I know mate but sorted now. I rekons I will start my alterations to neg when the money is there. Hopefully some before this meet need to get my bbs's refurbed though when you have the time. What filler do you need for the curb marks?
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: Peej1981 on 22 November 2010, 20:31
How deep are the curb marks??? You can use any types of filler, the best i found was a special metal filler which costs about £10 a tube but most of the curb marks i will be able to sand and smooth them out. I am wanting to do my ats's soon so if you want you can bring yours down too and we can do both of them at the same time, dont worry i will show yoou what to do to prep them first and spray them.
O yeah forgot to say, you know that neg has been having these little advantages off road, i noticed that my bonnet hasnt been affected or banged etc etc, keep up the good work

They are going to look spot on mate. Have a chat with diamondhell about harnesses though. Apparently they are not as safe as a seatbelt unless you have them strapped onto a harness bar. Can't remember the details but he will fill you in.

Have a chat with diamondhell about harnesses though. Apparently they are not as safe as a seatbelt unless you have them strapped onto a harness bar.

While fitting in some random Subaru seats, using the original seat mounts isn't a terrible idea, it will need to be done carefully, to ensure what you're doing is strong enough that it won't collapse in an impact.  How confident are you in your welding?  It has to be properly done, not bird sh*t-stylee rubbish.

Unless you are competent and getting sufficient heat into your welds and penetration making up your own seat-mounts isn't something to be undertaken lightly...... it would be a shame to see some sort of Darwin-esque incident involving your Golf and the deletion of a small number of IQ points from the gene pool.

As for the harnesses, really you need 5/6 point, including a crutch strap and for them to be properly effective they need to be tight enough that you can't move about comfortably in normal road driving.  If you can then I'll wager the set up you have won't retain you any better than a factory 3-point belt.

If you're going to replace your 3-point belts you need a minimum of 3" shoulder straps.  If you go for 4-point harnesses to go with those seats (because there's no crutch strap hole, because they're designed for use with a 3-point belt) then be aware you're at risk of submarining down under the harness, doing a lot of damage to your back especially if it's not properly tightened, because you're 'just driving about on the road'.

You've also got to ask yourself 'what will happen with the shoulder straps in an accident?' because those seats are designed to be used with a 3-point belt, not a harness.  The shoulder straps should really be as short as possible and secured within an angle of 0-10 degrees downwards from your shoulders.  Is the hole in the seat even designed to accept a harness? I doubt it very much, because - here we are again - they're not designed for harness use.

So, you have a single threaded hole on the outside of the car, which is designed to accept the waist strap on the outer side, but the inner seatbelt mount (the clip) is mounted on the seat frame on the original set up, so when you slide the seat forwards and backwards the whole fixed harness will twist across your body and need substantial adjustment to ensure it's correct whenever the seat is moved.

You'll need to weld a spreader plate on the underside of the tunnel (not the inside) to secure the inner waist strap mounts.

Now what of the shoulder straps?  You've got nothing to use in the rear, have you?  The top mounts for the rear seats are miles away and off-centre, so you'll be dragged across in an impact.  The bottom mounts are way outside the maximum 45 degree angle downwards, plus if you use them, on an impact, as the seats aren't designed to take a downwards force on impact the back rest, the harnesses are going to pull down on your spine and crush it - yay back problems for you.  Your only option is to fit a 'proper' harness bar - tubing of the correct diameter across the rear turrets, with appropriate spreader plates to stop it tearing out on an impact.

Even suggesting you could use a strut brace to mount your straps to is utterly laughable.  It's designed to stiffen the car, not take any form of impact.  You'd be a complete moron to ever contemplate using one as a mount.

So, possibly a little more work than you're expecting and something that is not going to be comfortable, or sensible in a day to day car.

You'd be far better off retaining the standard 3-point belt and getting one of these (http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p6357/CG-LOCK-SEAT-BELT-ADD-ON/product_info.html) for enthusiastic driving.

as for the harness brace. How thick must it be exactly? Avery thing els is covered.

Do your own research.

So you've covered off the spreader plates on the inside of the tunnel as well?
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lemski on 12 December 2010, 19:11
Well is a spreader plate to space out the harness edges off the runners. Like a washer type thing? And a scafold pole type thickness for harness bar? I can get all that's needed from various people I know. And I though advice was suppose to be given. People have different size harness bars. I just would of liked to know how thick exactly. You could of just said to research it all and not offered any help instead of being a nob about it. Am sure your intentions are ment well but if you didn't want to give advise then you could of just said DH.
Title: Re: project neg
Post by: Diamond Hell on 12 December 2010, 19:18
Go on the attack, why not?

A spreader plate goes inside the tunnel and has the nut welded to it, it spreads the load of the pull from the harness.

NEVER scaffold bar anywhere in your car, ever.

I've given you a bunch of information, but why the hell should I spoon-feed you all of the information you need?  Go learn yourself some understanding yourself.  Look out the MSA's Blue Book for 2011 to understand what you need.  You'll come out the other side wiser which will make it worthwhile, instead of being a knob about it.

Title: Re: project neg
Post by: lewis1641 on 13 December 2010, 22:33
here's your answer i think liam.  it reads that harnesses should be attached to the rollcage and the spec for that tubing is

1.4.1. Specifications of the tubes used:
Minimum Material
Cold Drawn Seamless Carbon Steel
Minimum Yield Strength
350 N/mm2
Minimum Dimensions (Ø in mm)
45 x 2.5 or 50 x 2.0
38 x 2.5 or 40 x 2.0 (For roll cages/bars approved
prior to 1.1.95).
1.4.2. In selecting the steel, attention must be paid to
obtaining good elongation properties and adequate
weldability.

this is obviously for motorsport purposes but at the end of the day if it is good enough for the track its good enough for mummy's little soldier on the road. we just need to figure out what that actually means before walking into a steel supplier and looking like a tool!

Soundillusion - nice to hear from you. Am going to price it all up. Mite just keep standard seatbelts depending on price.
Dave - we will have to have a word with scott to see or poss go to scunny to find the metal needed. There will be somewhere that sells it for what we need. Also have to find some stainless pipeing for my exhaust and centre box to be sorted. But I'll txt you tonight about that.

Post by: lemski on 29 December 2010, 21:25
Well. Big things happened today. I decided to get my 16s back on the car nxt weekend. But I want to keep it low and as the 16s are stupid offset they sit at the edge of the arches. So I'd have to raise it. Well I thought about this and decided am going to roll my arches. Backs were ground back to make sure no rust then heat gun and a hammer by my mate ian to got the lips bent in and a slight pulling with a scafold pole. Sorted.
For the fronts I decided that I wanted a nice arch line and also wanted to still go low. So after getting a spare wint to replace mine that was rotted. I set about pulling the lip. (Towel and molegrips), as my technique wasn't good to begin with I had some dimples to sort. Easy though as the filler is needed to go on all arches to get things smoothed. Its not finished buts its good for now. I even lowed the front another 20mm and still got 20mm of clearence on the arch.
Pics up tomorow of all the arches and seats and other things I need to put up.
Cheers to martin and ian for the help today.

sorry about last photo was stood quite far back but zoomed in. i'll get a better one up.
als o much more arch work is needed to get neg where i want him to sit on the stance. bit more front pulling and pull the rears right out aswell to look like the fronts. but fronts are more of a importance as i want them perfect ready to spray.  :nerd:

Wheels are a massive improvement over the black ones.

haha knew that was my old bonnet, you'd have bought it off a lad called Damo then, he got it off me. This is the car it was originally on..

Good to see you've got your seats in... Would be nice to see them from the other side though, side view pic with front door open maybe?

You're a brave man pulling you arches out,  not quite sure how you're doing it? More info on painting,  what's the plan there then?

PS wheels look good but preferred it on black ones.  :lipsrsealed:

There are many ways to pull the arches. Getting my mate who's a sprayer to spray arches and doors and boot lid all at once and blend it all in. Wheels may be going black. I like em because they stick further out. Makes it feel stirdier mate. I will get that picture angle tomorow, tried through front window but want gunna happen.
Plan tomorow is too pull the rear arches out.

Pic of seats can't be that hard, you saw mine....

I was just curios how you did it as it's something I've never done, only method I'm aware of is using a hammer and dollies.

Post by: lemski on 01 January 2011, 22:27
Hwat gun to do the backs to heat metal and dollie. Then a scaffold pole to role lip in.
On the front though I used a thick sheet and mole grips to pull them, not the best way but I new I'd have to fill them to get em even ne way. Then scafold pole again to role a little more and I have seen yours. I will go for side view tomorow. I want my arches more to go lower now its on 16s.

what car in PVW was that bonnet on? Might have been on the gti I bought as a donor as I sold it to the guy that owned that. Just curious as to how much my old bonnet has got about lol

Title: Re: project neg wheels now fitted
Post by: Peej1981 on 02 January 2011, 09:57
Yeah it was a baby blue mk2 with red teledials, think it was only a driver too not gti? It is funny how we have managed to come about your bonnet, did you buy it like that or do it yourself as it is a really good job. I will try anf find a pic of the car in the mag and the bonnet on it.
Title: Re: project neg wheels now fitted
Post by: tsr_adi on 02 January 2011, 11:38
It was on my donor car gti then. You'l be surprised to learn the teledials were actually dyno-rod orange and the car was originally atlas grey, then Damo covered the whole car in blue gaffa tape! You would have seen it in that state. He then removed all the tape (making a mess) and brushed the whole car matt black, which is how I bought it, and the mechanicals of it all live in my mk2 now.

I bought the rat 1300 you saw with the bonnet already on it, but wasn't a fan of the rusty bonnet look so bought a black one with a huge vw badge sprayed on it. The guy I bought the car off did that iron cross over 3 or 4 attempts till he was happy with it, he spent a lot of time on it so its not surprising it turned out alright!

I thought it looked like someone had tried to sand it back down again. Not really that bothered by it as it is up in the corner so dont really pay attention to it.

So it is oil that has made it do that? How did that happen?

Well project neg is coming to the end of its duties. I have found a 3door and started collecring parts for that.
I am however taking the engine out of him and droppin it into the new one.
As a sort of last send off I went on the rollers for charity. Not as easy as you would think. Lowered cars be weary about rollors.
Doc was great at getting it on how ever.
Now I got 129.7bhp but dint hit a peak at the looks of the print out. Aslso it seemed that it was suckin in hot air.
Sorted the air problem 1st by blocking the warm air pipe from exhaust and gutting the rest of my airbox. Then drilled it wing side and fitted a cold air feed. Few more things need changing when the engine comes out but I will carry on the build thread for it then.

Thanks for reading my boring post

Liam

Neg has now done its last legs. He has done me proud through the year but the dif has now packed in. Engine will live on though in another car
