Title: Golf MK3 1.9D wont start when cold
Post by: MR-MK395 on 20 October 2010, 17:39
Ive got a 1995 Mk3 1.9D Golf. Last winter i started having problems with my golf starting on cold mornings. Sometimes it would start with the manual choke and putting my foot down on the accelerator. Other times i would have to disconnect the hose from the air filter and spray cold start when turning the ignition. And i managed to get it through the winter.

Now that its starting to get cold again, the problem has re-surfaced. 2 weeks ago i replaced all glow plugs, however, it doesnt seem to have made a difference.

I had a previous golf Mk3 1.9D and it had the same problems, and was led to believe that it was a problem with the glow plugs, however one had snapped off in the cylinder, and therefore had to scrap it.

As i have had the exact same problem with my old golf, im not sure if this is a common fault, and am wondering if anyone would be able to help me.

Thanks in advance.

Does the glow plug light stay on for about 10 seconds then go off?

i have a 96 tdi mk3 not had any problems yet with cold start.
i would check hoses/breather/filters. check throttle body/carb clean.
i heard that some people using 2 stroke oil in the fuel to stop it from freezing.

Check for power to the glowplugs as a 1st step.

Initally the glowplug light doesnt come on, but i turn off the ignition and back on again and it lights up for 10 seconds. and still when it goes off it still doesnt start.

I had forgot to mention that when the engine is trying to turn over, there is alot of white smoke coming from the exhaust, and when it eventually does start it goes away after about 5 - 10 seconds.

Thanks for the advice about checking the power to the glow plugs, that was what i was thinking. Is it a relatively quick / easy check. Ive got the haynes manual somwhere, just need to find it.

cheers

I would suspect your glow plugs have a timer or control relay, might have burnt out.
