Title: 130000 miles on a vr6 too much?
Post by: selectcase on 27 May 2003, 00:13
Hi any advice greatly appriciated here.

My wife has seen an M reg golf vr6 at a local garage for ?4000 the only thing is it has 130000 on the clock. Is this a high milage for this sort of engine? or does it still have lots of life?

any advice on what to look out for would also be appriciated

cheers

In typical vw style 130k on an engine isnt unheard of in the slightest...

As far as the vr6 goes, as long as the fsh is intact and the car drives well there should not be any probs...Just have a good look around check for smoke on startup the usual deal, I think the only main prob I can think of is the head gasket giving up, im sure others will of further issues

Christ most vw engines dont wake up and bed in until after 100k ;)

Cheers

i  wouldn't say that that sort of milage  is too high for a vr6. i bought my first golf (84 gti) with 114,000 on the clock and it was still going strong at 140,000, if not better. and that was only a 1.8 so a 2.8 should be still going strong.

as far as spending 4 grand, i reckon you could pick up a lower milage model for that sort of money. check out autotrader.co.uk.

hope this is of some use to you mate.

The VR6 engine is good for about 250-300 thousand but 4000 pounds is to high 3500 to 3800 top price. Like the man said there are better and cheaper ones about.  I paid 4850 for a p- plate VR6 highline 80.000 miles black with all trimings

Have to agree with Ows ,Jonny Boy and Trebor VR6, the engine will go on for the best part of forever, forget the mileage, and the price is definitely too high.
The only thing you'll get out of paying this price is a warranty on an engine that won't need replacing.
Go private, you'll find the same car, cheaper with lower mileage, and have the knowledge it can't have been thrashed (on the basis that I have yet to meet anyone who has manged to 'thrash' a V engiine). Autotrader is the best bet, but check ebay, you never know what might come up.

Happy hunting

dont be bloody silly.....

my old golf had done 250.000 miles when i got rid of it and it is still running about today!!!!.....4 years later

just make sure that if you want to give your motor the beating of a lifetime..that you change the oil regularly every 4-5000 miles
