I may be being a total cheapskate here...... but has anyone fitted Falken FK452 on their cars past or present?
I'm tempted to buy some for my new winter wheels.
Yes I can be a spirited driver at times ( no point in having a GTI otherwise ) but mainly I just use my car for commuting to and from work (motorways and A roads). Plus in winter if it gets really bad ( like the odd day last year ) I drive like miss daisy or take the wifes car to work whilst mines safely tucked away in the garage.
So what do you guys think on these tyres.........? :undecided:

Myself and fellow forum member Steve_PD seem to be amongst the minority here but we both felt they were the WORST tyres we've had fitted to our cars, albeit MK4's
I found they were fine for the first couple of thousand miles but after that I found them to be poor in all conditions
Whether or not they aren't suited to diesel engine cars I can't say but everyone who has fitted them to the petrol equivalent have raved about them :undecided:
I eventually replaced them with Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta tyres and found them a vast improvement over the Falkens
-
I've never used Falkens myself.. although I think if you're looking to save money, tyres are not the place to save really.
However.. I have used Yokohama Parada Spec 2s, which are fairly cheap, they have loads of grip in the dry and are really progressive in the wet. I preferred them to Bridgestone Potenzas when I had a Civic.
-
Another vote for the Vredesteins, best tyre I've ever used.
-
Martin dont get your prioritys wrong over a few quid on tyres , IMO tyres are more important than alloys mate but i'm sure you know this anyway.
-
I see it as false economy having winter wheels and not using winter tyres myself.

Thanks all for the comments............
My new set of alloys were purchased so I can try and preserve my Monza Shadows through the winter months (and cause I'm a serial wheels changer).
TBO I might as well just swap my Dunlop SP Sort Max tyres from my existing alloys on to my new wheels. Then just run these tyres into the ground and by 4 x new Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta tyres as recommended.
-
Absoultly not! Shocking tyres! Had them on my Polo for a couple of weeks when I bought a set of alloys off someone, then spun the car on the roundabout in slightly damp conditions! Straight on the phone to order some new ones!
No point in buying a 25-30K car and putting sh!tty tyres on them, only thing that keeps you on the road!

Hi guys, im over from the Mk5 section - hope you dont mind me commenting!
I have FK452's on my MK5 GTI - i find them perfectly fine! Yes, they aren't the last word in wet grip compared to Conti's and i haven't tried the Vredesteins although i've read good things. In the dry they give me confidence and there isn't much road noise on the m/way.
I would like to try the Vredesteins but one i wouldn't try are Goodyear Eagle F1's - i had them on my last car (Fiat Panda 100HP - OEM fitted from new!) and i found them absolutely shocking! Worst tyres i've ever used - wet grip was non existant and they lasted 6k miles at a push!
I think i would try Vredesteins next, but the FK452s are ok - not shocking, but not the best i've used
-
I have used Falkens on all my cars over the years. They are average across the board of wet/dry/cold conditions, last well and they have massive kerb protectors.

I totaly agree about the F1's awfull tyres in the winter but they are summer tyres!

I had 452s on my Black Detroits (you really should have bought them you know Martin  ).
I got them because they were a) well priced and I don't do much mileage so can't justify £150 a tyre from Michelin and b) one of the guys on Cupranet I know really rates them for grip and he does his fair share of trackdays so won't fit rubbish.
They are a bit slippy for a couple of hundred miles as the rubber has a sheen from the moulding when new but once it has been worn off they're a pretty decent tyre. Mind you I don't drive like a banshee on the roads anyway (not very often at least).
So all in all my review would state that they are round and black and I didn't fall off the road when I had them on the car.
Sidewall wise they won't have much protection so beware of kerbs when you're cruisin' past da laydeez on your way to my pole dancing extravaganza........ :lipsrsealed:

Were they the asssymetric ones?

^^Indeed they were Gilly , very good wet conditions but found them awful in winter sub zero tempitures ?? Also only lasted 5000 miles :undecided:

agreed. not so great in winter... but as a summer tyre they were faultless. I managed a good 15k on them but that involved swaping them over and that was on the R32 :nerd:

Heres a well written review on the 452's, as driven on a 300bhp 350z over 7000 miles.

Surely if you don't do many miles you can justify the Michelins as you wont be having to replace them anytime soon.
I've tried all sorts on my V6 TDI Passat, and the Michelin PS3's I've got on at the moment have been the best by a long way.

Martin mah deah,
Put the Dungflops on the cheapo wheels and grace the Mona Lisa Shadows with Contis or Micheys. Those Fuuckens are awful flops.
You would not wear Clarke shoes with an Armani suit would you?
-
^^ Martin does wear Clarkes I've seen him with them on
-
I put a couple of 452's on my Alfa before I got rid of it, to replace some worn Pirelli PZero's. No problem with them at all, grip levels seemed good wet or dry. I Wouldn't put them on as winter tyres though!
-
I see it as false economy having winter wheels and not using winter tyres myself.
Amen to that.
Stick to proper summer tyres in summer, and have proper winter tyres in winter...that way you can at least expect the tread design and compound to work well in the conditions it's designed for.
I can't fault F1s in summer...but wouldn't expect them to be anything other than crap in winter - along with every other summer tyre.
In my experience, there is no such thing as an all year round tyre.
'All year round' means crap in summer, in the wet, and in winter.
Assuming it's cold - only a couple of degrees C - but not icy, I find a car on winter tyres almost as quick point to point as the same car on summer tyres, in summer, and WAY quicker that the same car on the same road, with summer tyres on (so you will still have the ability to take on a decent backroad)
Did that last bit make sense? :undecided:

Right Steve.... I know where you live, on my way round with a baseball bat
