Title: Stu's Mk3 1.8t [projectninetynine]
Post by: LazyLunatic on 19 October 2010, 00:43
Just a little teaser of a new project! Old engine is out and just got back from a 6 hour round trip picking up the 1.8t AUM engine. 20k miles on the clock, k03s, g60 box! Hopefully get it stripped and all checked and built back up this week with a new flywheel and vr clutch, and get it bolted in on the weekend.

Pics of car and engine bay and new engine to follow!

Through all the excitement I forgot to write its not my car! Its my mates! Massive lol, cant believe I didnt write that! I'm doing the conversion with him. Exciting times!

Its currently at the spray shop, its going to be a black metallic-y House of Kolor color. Engine is sprayed and it looks unbelieveable! Will put my car to shame for sure! And all the lessons I learned through my conversion will be used here, so this car should be sh!t hot.

Not sure on management, would like to use standard ecu, but will see what pops up.

I'll get on this one and get it done a little quicker lol! At least its getting the 1.8t, it would have had the standard 1.8 with bike carbs if it wasnt for me and my proding stick :D

Siiick, so wish I had done this with my mk3

I love it, means I can do another conversion now, but knowing what I'm doing and exactly what's needed, its great! Saves me the money of doing my own!

Update: Have now got new G60 flywheel, VR6 Sachs clutch kit, all the bolts for the clutch/flywheel. Just need the gearbox to engine bolts and a starter and a few other bits and it will be ready to drop in.

I want to build a proper "built for speed" mk3 1.8t, but that won't happen for years. Thats my project for when I have a decent job and a house with a garage lol.

Any idea how your gonna do it yet? I've been thinking about getting an aum and an agg loom and having a go at it first as I cant have the car off the road for long, but I'm still pretty clueless lol

Nope! Started the wiring, not looking too bad, going to get it finished this week. Need to look at the ecu as i think it needs he immobiliser removed.

I just got a 1.8t aum loom off ebay so I'm gonna be having a crack at this soon too :P Following the guide for the mk2 on clubgti, been told its almost exactly the same as they use the same fusebox. Only problem is I wont know if I'm successfull until I hook it all up!

I got topher to do my immob and map for me, maybe worth asking him. Although he does a mobile service Plymouth maybe a bit far for him to go though :P

What intercooler are you using? I was thinking of one from a merc sprinter van, you know if they will fit infront of the rad?

They fit on a mk2 so they should fit on a wider mk3

Hola. I'm using an ebay £50 intercooler. 2.5" ends. Sits in the front end nicely with a little trimming of the bumper and a length of 40mm ali angle to bolt it to the steel crossmember.

Haven't been working on it this weekend, been away to Bristol (Shopping with the missus for her B'day).

Good stuff Dan!

Update: Haven't done anymore wiring, but did get a fair bit done this weekend:

Shot of it outside after fitting some freshly sprayed parts

Boost piping is almost done, just need to chop the pipe on the right side there and join it up with a 135 silicone hose. Few different bits of piping needed around the bay to finish things off, like coolant lines to the reservoir, etc. Rad is plumbed in and the heater matrix. Cold side of FMIC is connected to TB. N249 and N112 are all gone, SAI sh!te is gone.

Getting there. Next couple weeks going to fit the brakes, shift setup, zaust, finish as much of the bay as possible and order the rest of what's needed for it.

On order now is braided hoses and a Forge Split-R valve. I'll be borrowing it though until he needs it :D

In other news, the bodywork is coming along. House of Kolor paint is on its way, the sunroof has been removed and the roof it now done and in primer with no sunroof. All the arch work is sorted and most of the other panels have been prepped.

Hoping to get the majority of the conversion done this year and I think my mate is hoping to have the car out of the bodyshop all freshly painted and looking sweet this year too. Will be a daily-driven show car when its done and on the road!

Getting there, haven't really touched it since last time I said about it. Going to have a read up on it to see if there is anything that I could easily miss/forget; things that could be fatal for the engine, that sort of stuff :D

Got loads done recently. Pretty everything in the bay is plumbed in now, wiring is pretty much there too! Found out there is no lambda loom (the second part of the loom) but luckily we found the exact loom on ebay just now for £33, so no worries.

Things to do:

- Fit new brake lines from front to each rear brake.
- Edit second loom when it arrives and connect wires together.
- Defeat immob on AUM ECU.
- Add oil and coolant and other fluids.
- Brake fluid
- Few other vacuum lines and the odd pipe
- Check over all bolts, pipes, etc.
- Sort handbrake
- Super unleaded!
- Tweak gear linkage/tower (when its drivable)

Probably a few other bits, buts its getting there! Will be sweet if I got the wiring right and it started up and idled and revved and kept running! :D

We are, just the engine was missing the second loom (lambda loom). Will strip off all the stuff off that, plug, plug and wiring should be sorted :)

Will let you know what's what with piccies, etc Dan when we get it started and running OK. Seems much easier than expected, but again, haven't finished yet and its not running yet :D

Yep, wiring is getting there. Just need to finish the 2nd loom and then wire it all up. Oh and grab some resistors.

Brakes lines are in and brakes are done now. Clutch cable conversion fitted, just need to grab a Mk2 1300 cable and put that on.

Then its just get the wiring spliced in and connected up, plug in the ECU and fit a new battery.

Whack the front seats back in for test run and then fix what needs fixing's.

Test run should be happening when I back from hols. Probs be Sat 22nd. Can't wait! We'll see if I've done the wiring right. Will be well chuffed if it works :D

If Stu pulls his finger out while I'm away and the bodyshop pull their fingers out, then I should come back to a mint looking resprayed car with some sexy refurbed Borbet's that's calling "Wire me up!"

OK! So tomorrow is the big day, hopefully if things go well I can finish off the wiring and we can finish plumbing everything in. Sort the handbrake and get the clutch working properly.

Fingers crossed the ECU turns up, so might be able to turn the key for the first time!

Need to order some resistors soon to get the coolant gauge working properly and to delete all the stuff we've taken off.

:)

Not this time. Starter motor turned on ignition but didn't seem to engage, then began to smoke after say 5 seconds of cranking. Took the starter motor off to check it worked using the same terminals and connections off the car wiring and it worked fine. So not sure what's up. 99% sure the flywheel and clutch are fitted correctly. Arghhhh!

I know, Stu said he couldn't turn it over by hand, I thought we had checked then when we first got the engine :(

Going to try again tomorrow, but it would make sense why the starter sounds like its turning over and just gets hot and smokes.

He's getting the spray shop to hurry up and get it done, so we can get it home and strip the engine down and see what's up. I'll be checking the wiring again though, so we can wrap it up and make all the spliced connection clear, labelled and any other loom connections secure, so we can just plug it all back in later and not have to worry about it.

You should not need that to turn it over, take the plugs out and see if you can turn it over with a normal ratchet.

Well if it was seized then that will have done it no good at all, you might have broken a piston ring or done more damage.

send rubjonny a pm on here or clubgti, he did my loom for me and it was spot on started first time no troubles at all. you'll need to splice in a couple of wires for the brake, clutch, and diagnostics but thats it my whole wiring install took about a hour. He's also probabaly the most helpfull guy in the world!
