I picked up my 1st golf yesterday? :grin: and the electric windows were working fine. However! when i got it home i let my dad drive it and the drivers window had stopped working??? Any ideas?

this is a typical mk2 mate.
Try the switches by pressing harder on them. also check the wires so any splits near the door hinges.
If not that then i would put washers between the motor screws and the door metal. this pushes the motor abit more into the door and free's up the window.

Ive had something like this before, like Blue says switches and wiring. If it is the switches they can be pulled apart and cleaned up, this works for a while. Bit tricky to get back together but cheap fix. Else you will need to get it apart and splice some fresh wiring in between the body and door.
If fixed my issues by cleaning the switches but was sat in a traffic jam on the M6 on a stonking hot day, wound down the windows and thought I saw something float through the car. Then looked down to see thick white smoke pooring from a switch. Turned out that the drivers side jammed on and started to burn out. Had to rip the switch out real quick to avoid a fire :grin:
Decided to go buy a new switch, wasnt that much, might be the way to go :smiley:

I had this too picked up my mk2 last week but only just had enough time to look over it this weekend and took passenger door card off to find no electric window mech and a piece of 2x4 holding the window closed!!!!!!!! Mmmm makes me wonder about the rest..... :undecided: :(

Bad luck with that!! My bro had a look at it today but it was working fine... Typical. If it happens again i think ill try a new switch anyway as there not too expensive. Cheers for the help.

Swap the switches over next time, then you can see if its the switch or dodgy wiring :smiley:

my passenger side one has just stopped :angry:
It was working fine until I washed the car. I tried swapping the switches over to see if it was that, but still the same. the drivers side works with both switches. Going to take the door card off after lunch and see if I can see anything wrong in there. then test the voltages going down the loom into the motor. it bettered not be another motor gone as they're ?117 for a proper genuine one. :cry:

ive just been to the scrappys and picked up a passenger side whole mechanism for ?35 that should sort the piece of 2x4 out :wink:

Another likely cause of intermittent electric windows on a mk2 is lack of lubrication. The motors and window mechanism cables are very unlikely to ever have been re-lubricated and the whole thing can end up sticking. My drivers window sometimes sticks but a quick thump on the doorcard in the area of the motor soon gets it going again. I'm sure some grease and WD40 will remedy this on a warm day when I feel like stripping the doors down. Silicone based lubricant on the window runners will also help.

i used to turn the bass line up. the pounding of the subs nocked some life into the motor :grin:

got the same problem with mine.The drivers side is works when it feels like but like tobz a quick bang on the doorcard and hey presto it works again!! :smiley:i love my golf!!!!

I took the door card off and had a look and the connections. there was a bit of corrosion on the terminals which I cleaned off and the window works again now. :cool:
