Title: if money was no object
Post by: Toopay_MkIII_GT on 17 October 2010, 22:57
i was thinking other day if money was no object, what i could be done with the mk3 engines. granted, if money was no object doubt anyone would fuss over a mk3 golf. everone one moans about the 8v gti being a dog. so money no object, what could/would you do with the 8v?? sames goes with the 16v and vr6. what sorts of power could be reached with ech of the engine with thousands was lobbed at them and no expense spared?

me, i would have the whole engine stripped, block port, polished, gas flowed, every valve, seal, piston, replaced for new, crank uprated, 4-2-1 mainifolds etc. but keep it oem ish nothin major, just see what could be got out of the engines.

would ppl go down the keep it orignal but tweek abit, or would you bolt on the biggest chargers/nos etc that the engine could handle??
how much do you think could be got out of the mk3 engien bhp wise no bars holded??

whats your thoughts?

8v 2.1 conversion, crossflow big valve head, good cam and throttle bodies.

16v and vr6, supercharged.

Hell, how long have we got here?! My thing would be an N/A 16v. Taking that as the base, I reckon 300bhp should be achieveable; I think Volvo were running over 320 at the height of the Supertouring era in BTCC. To commence at the inlet, I'd go for individual throttle bodies with variable geometry trumpets breathing from an airbox of carefully calculated volume. Eight injectors with one bank of four down by the ports and the other four injecting upstream into the trumpets. Fly by wire throttle control to allow the ECU to control the butterflies for optimum gas speed. Head would probably be modded radically as per a Supertourer, i.e ports machined out and replaced with the biggest straightest ones I could get in. Separate cam carriers machined and bolted on. Would invest a large wedge of time and money on developing the best cam profiles for the engine. Would use some good big valves with the slimmest stems I could get away with. Steel crank with the finest rods Arrow could make for me and an ultra lightweight aluminium flywheel. Maybe something stupidly trick for the pistons like aluminium berylium to keep the reciprocating mass right down. Exhaust manifold design would naturally be a full tubular affair of which ever design gave best results, manufactured in Inconel as per F1. To minimise internal friction would use DLCs and similar coatings on every moving part possible. Final details would be a full dry sump oil system and an electric water pump with full thermostatic control. There, one engineer's fantasy 'Dub motor!

I'd say so...Mr Lehmann will sell you a crate engine making 280ish BHP...if you have deep enough pockets, and that's using the standard cam carriers etc.

Ahh...nice choice!

looks like the works kitcars had 260bhp and theres a full spec there too

this site is full of useful (and useless  ) information!

No limit on the cash = no limit on the bhp, literally!

Surprised the W12 has not been mentioned yet.

If we are going to dream, lets do it with some ambition folks

Well if we're really going to get carried away, I'd design my own engine from scratch, because then I'd know it was the best...
