Title: out of interest
Post by: fozziie on 17 October 2010, 15:03
does anybody know which bits from a MK3 (engine interior etc etc) can be transplanted into a MK2 shell? because if it works out cheaper for me to buy a MK2 with a fubered engine or whatever than it is to have all the welding etc etc done, then i'll be going down that route.

Not much to be honest, if the mk2 is a later car then te engine will swap in easy enough.

what engine is it you have in the mk3? pretty much everything bay side will swap over except the rad, heater matrix fits as do the shocks from all 4 corners, wishbones, hubs etc. wiring loom plugs in if mk2 is 90spec, doesnt if its pre-90. but not always an issue depending what mk3 engine and what mk2 you want to put it into.  fuel tank, pump, filter housign and lines also fit straight on, but may not be required again depending on mk3 engine ansd what mk2 you get to put it into.

manifold and downpipe will fit, get a cat bypass and it'll fit straight onto a mk2 16v exhaust system.  isnt a lot from a mk3 mechanically that doesnt fit tbh, trim obv wont be any use.

rear seats pretty much straight swap, front seats fit using 90spec mk2 front seat bases from any model

I thought the welding was just a couple of sills?

+1 i'm struggling to see how transferring the internals of your mk3 into a mk2 shell is going to be easier/cheaper than welding a couple of sills  :undecided:

its not just the sills, the guy at the garage hasn't even taken the plastic off the sills yet. its underneath the car, theres a hole just behind the front jacking point and he claims its needing more done under the car aswell, all they can say just now is that the labour for one side alone, based on a quick inspection, is going to be between 2 and 3 hundred quid. And then theres still the other side to do aswell. so factor for twice that. so its looking like 400 quid of welding.

and then of course theres the cost of materials for welding, and the front suspension, the tyres arent too much of a problem, i can get them cheap enough, the wheel bearing, the cost of storing the car for a few months while i save the pennies for the welding etc etc. its gonna be far easier to get hold another shell and make one good car from the two.

Depends where that hole is. If its inboard of the sill seam, which is the jacking point then yes its a bit more involved but only a plate job.
Have told you on a previous thread what the sills cost.
I really think you should get some more quotes!
I cant believe there is only one garage you can take this to in the Dundee area.

Yeah it would be worth buying some new sills and welding them on.

Aye, gonna take it round some garages on wednesday when im off college and see about some other quotes. I dont usually bother with car repairs, if it needs more than 100 quid of work i usually scrap and replace, but i have to say, im quite fond of this one and really dont want to have to get a new one. at least the work for the next MOT means it wont need done for the one after!

Im just a wee bit confused because i looked over the last few MOT results (using the directgov motoring thingy, and it failed its MOT last year because it needed a lot of welding.

the cousin is upto his neck with his own work unfortunately. i could ask him for a lend of his welder and buy the materials myself, but then i'd probably just end up welding the car to the jack, and then setting fire to it. haha
