Title: VW GTI 2010 MK6 stiff suspension on bumpy roads
Post by: Pavelo on 16 October 2010, 12:15
Hi, i have just bought my new vw 2010 GTI and i am quite happy with it but one thing frustrates me alot:

I noticed the suspension is quite rigid on bumpy roads...can i replace my shock absorbers to make my ride smooth ? i hate the feeling this car brings when the roads are bumpy....It feels like the car is being HIT strong by the bumpy road....on well asphalted roads it is amazing...Pls let me know if there is a solution for this problem.

Note: my car doesn't come with the "damping dynamic chassis control - DDC" option

Thank you
Pavelo

Give it a bit of time and the suspension will settle down. Takes around 1500 - 2000 miles for this. It's much better then and much more bearable.
ACC/DCC would have solved this problem.

Mine was like this and if you read my old posts on this forum you will see i was not happy with the ride quality and i did wish i had gone for ACC(called DCC in europe). I felt the ride was far far too hard.
It has improved with time and now i have 3000 miles on the car its alot smoother and im happy with the ride now.
I would say give it some time if the car is new as mine changed alot.

Chaps, do you think it really settles down or do you just get used to it?  Yes, I think there will be some settling down of all comonents in the car, but will it actually make that much of a difference only after a few thousand miles?

It really does settle down. I can now use the ACC in 'Normal' mode without any discomfort. Even 'Sport' mode is totally acceptable. Another thing I noticed is that there is less 'noise' generally.
I have compared a new GTi with ACC and my 2500 miler on the same roads (both cars with 18" wheels and Bridgestones) and there is definitely a diference.

I noticed this too when picking up my Golf and I came from a Polo GTI on coilovers!!! I put it down to the 18" wheels? Then I lowered it and made it worse! But looks beter

You are kidding. How can you bare it. I hate bumps more than humps. In a lowered car it must be just so uncomfortable.

Yes it does change.
I have more than one car in my household. I currently have 4 cars on the road i can choose from. I regular drive the others for weeks at a time. So i don't get use to one car as many others do.
(Also meens i don't get use to the power, start driving incorrectly and think its slow so needs chipping or needs selling for something faster  It actually works out Cheaper that way )
So when i get back into the mk6 I feel all the differences to the other car i had been driving all over again.
For example the car i was using for my daily driver for 2 years before i got the mk6 i used for a week and a bit at the beggining of this month. When i got back in the mk6 this week i felt the differences all over again. But unlike when it was new im not thinking the ride is killing me because its jittery, over hard, harsh.
