Title: My interlagos wheels have found their new home, what wheels next for me?
Post by: MAW73 on 15 October 2010, 15:55
Here's my interlagos wheels at there new home.......... they suit the Mk5 GTI really well imo. Silver alloys on a black car is always a winner

I'll probably regret selling them

Oh well.... So moving on, does anyone have any suggestions for new 18" wheels for my car  ( as a winter set )........ ??

Yeh I quite like those Andy

vw racing have the unbadged versions on their website which look even better and the vw centre even fit which makes the wheels look more oem

Martin, shame on you not to have organised a proper wake!
BTW, I love those Vision Alloys. So delicate looking and would suit any GTi colour. Not boring looking like most alloys whatever their price. Worth their price in gold IMO. Possibly my very favourite.

On second thoughts, nah! Have to get the Bi-Xenons first, then the Re-map, then maybe Visions.

Yeh its certainly a ball ache changing wheels over, bloody hard work imo......... I did it myself recently thinking it was a 5 min job and it took me all morning ( never again ).

If I was you, I'd whip it down to your local tyre fitters to change the wheels over..... your see!

Anyway you not getting away from the fact that we want pics of your new wheels from tomorrow, YOU'VE GOT TILL 4PM TO POST OR WE WILL FIND YOU

Seriously mate I've got all gear to change the wheels over - but its worth just whipping it down to the local tyre fitters who will put it up on a ramp and swap the wheels over in no time for about £25-00. The last time I did it myself one of the security bolts was stuck solid. Only the tyre fitters managed to get it out using the pneuamtic wrench after a few goes.

Come on get it sorted we wanna see these new wheels. I take it you've sold the shadows then?

They are BBS 18" Monza II's refinished in Satin Black. I brought them from a guy on ebay for £350-00 which seems like a pretty good deal to me. I'm picking them up tomorrow morning

So my GTI will look a wee bit like this one..... I think they work quite well on a candy white.

Picked my new wheels up this morning. What and early bloody start though - I met the guy I brought them off at a service station in Leatherhead at 6am this morning (true drug dealer style)....... So I've been up since 5am this morning....... yawn, yawn

......... anyway, well chuffed with the wheels. They are absolutely mint and still boxed from when they were recently refurbed. The guy turned up in a fully loaded Mk5 GTI. I asked him why he was selling the wheels and apparently he needed the cash after a 'botched re-map' which messed up his engine and cost him a small fortune to put right ( so there’s a warning to us all ).

The guy even handed me some nice brand new VW centre caps....... @ £350-00 well pleased with my winter wheel purchase

Tyres next now..... and an early night tonight zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZzzz

These wheels certainly look very nice looking and would suit a GTI perfectly. Rep wheels worry me a bit though with regard to safety and I wouldn't be confident that the diamond cut finish would last that long..... however at £350-00 they may well be worth a punt.

I completely understand your deep emotional tie with those rather beautiful Interlagos wheels.
It can be so distressful when their replacements are so difficult to love.
I fully understand and appreciate the trauma for your sad loss.
You can count on my shoulders to weep uncontrolably on.
With deepest affection and unreserved sympathy,
Your ever loving friend and constant companion,

Martin,

I am also considering fitting interlagos to a mk6 gti. Could you advise me what size of tyres were on yours and did you have any issues with rubbing or was there a need for any wheel arch mods. I noticed some comments elsewhere re the fronts protruding slightly. Anything else i should consider before spending the cash ?. Thanks.

I brought the interlagos alloys from a rocco owner and therefore they had the original stock tyres on which were 235/40/18's which were absoulataly fine on the Golf. Ideally 225 tyres would be better suited to the car. Very rarely did I experience any rubbing. I think this only happened over a speed bump once or twice if I didn't take it slow enough. But never enough to be concerned about.

The wheels do extended past the front wheel arche by approximatly 13mm. A look which took a while to get used to and one which I didn't really like if I'm completly honest (however that's because I new it was there if you see what I mean). But by fitting 225 tyres the extension would be hardly noticable so I'm told. The interlagos wheels fill the back wheels arhes perfectly (better than the Monza shadows in my opionion).

What colour car are you thinking of fitting them to?? Imo I think they suit the darker coloured cars better. I did flirt with the idea of having mine re-finished in anthractite which probably would have looked the buisness ( but I chickened out )....  :embarassed:

I sold my interlagos alloys and tyres of a bit cheap at £550-00 as they were mint and had 3 very good tyres and 1 brand new tyre. I've since learned the price should have been around £700-800. But there you go..... you live and learn I guess !

Thanks Martin, I am fitting them to a carbon GTI, I agree they suit a dark coloured car better, I do also like the sound of them being in anthracite. The rear tyres are still good but the ones that were on the front will need changed so sounds like the best option will be to go with the 225s on the front which should any potential for rubbing issues. Thanks for your input.

FFS its been a stressful day with regard to getting my new wheels fitted. I dropped them in at the tyre fitters and apparently the wheels need a special metal tyre valve from vw. So a trip over to vw battersea to pick the valves up and then back to the tyre fitters. Thinking problem solved it wasn't as there are two different types of metal
valves (and I've got the wrong bloody ones). Battersea of course didn't have stock of the other type so I've had to order these in. So it will be a few days now till I can put the new wheels on. Aaaghhh

Oh well... The wheel suspense continues....

Sorry about your valveless search but your luck will improve once you delete the Interlagos wheels from your signature.

I will pray for thee, brother.

^ Stop repeating yourself....!

^ Stop repeating yourself....!

I've decided just to swap the tyres from my existing shadows on to the new wheels.....  as I just aswell run those tyres into the ground as there is still plenty of tread left and treat my self to some sexy new boots in the summer.

I've just given my new wheels a nice polish and wax ready for their imminent fitment. I just got to wait on VW now to get me these bloody valves.

The wheel whore is getting very impatient  and Gilly of course let us all down with the standard 17 wheels post yesterday.

Perfect choice IMO. Very good price too. Can you PM me where you are getting and fitting them? I am going to ditch the Bridgestones soon. Pretty rubbish.

My car is having my new winter alloys fitted this afternoon. I rang round loads of tyre fitters local to my work and couldn't find anyone other than bloody Kwik-Fit to do it ( so I'm expecting there to some kind of major disaster ).

Found a place, if you are interested, who will supply and fit the Contis for £125 each.

FFS the inevitable has happended. Kwik-Fit have dented the outer rims of two of my monza shadow wheels whilst removing the tyres. I wash those wheels every bloody week and they were absolutely mint before today. Well I shall be down there first thing in the morning to see the manager.  Has anyone else had the same problem with them? I think they should at least pay for refurbing the damaged alloys.

On a lighter note my new wheels look pretty good. Although I've not had a good chance to see them in the light as I picked the car up this evening. I'll post some pics when I've cleaned the car.

Kwik Fit???? Maw, come one man, what were you thinking!

Demand two NEW alloys, not refurbishment of your old ones.

Yep I agree Gossa why the hell did I go to Kwik-Fit in the first place? But tbo I've never had a problem with them before. This could happen anywhere, it just depends on how careful the fitter is. I pointed out to the fitter that the wheels are mint and to got careful. This is bloody ironic... swapping wheels over so they don't get damaged on the roads in the winter and then they get damaged in the process

Martin, I am horrified and sorry to hear what has happened. They must replace them. Insist.

I am now in two minds about tyre changing. I could not go through another drama after my bumper one.

Kwik fit!!! Arrghhhh...they are useless....they refused to repair a puncture on my 19",s as they couldnt guarantee "not marking the wheel" FFS a tyre company as well!! You couldnt make it up!

Took it to the local indy on the industrial estate...no problems at all.

Good luck with the manager...i sense a rant coming later because i know what there response will be!!!!!

Well here is the worst wheel......... its difficult to photograph that well but theres a gouge/dent in the outer rim of the alloy which I'm sure could have only happened when they removed the tyre

Heres the next alloy.................. in all fairness this could be the start of white worm or possible a stone chip damaging the lacquer ( so maybe not down the Kwik-Fit )  :undecided:

Another pic of the damaged outer rim of the alloy ( just to depress myself ) Its annoying as theres not another mark on that wheel apart from this.

Quick question, the clear coat lacquer you get with the VW touch up paint........ Can I use this on my monza's to seal a damaged area?

That's bl***dy awful, what a bunch of w***ers, there is no excuse for that with the modern tyre removal machines.

I have used the paint lacquer before on chips and it seems to work fine.

Definately the fault of the tyre fitter, exactly the same happened to me with my split rims . Marked every alloy with tiny chips trying to remove the tyres.

I think it's caused when they try to prise the tyre away from the alloy with a metal bar so the tyre machine can get under it and spin round.

Maw, don't let this go, you must demand new wheels mate, Kwik Fit are huge, they can meet the bill, you should not have to compromise here and DO NOT settle for a refurb as they will never be the same as original.

By the way, for the winter just whack on a couple of layers of wheel seal and wax and they will be well protected from the elements.

Cheers Gossa, I'm going to show the fitter and manager the damage to the wheel tomorrow. I have spoken with them on the phone today. We will see what happens.... I shall probably have to right a letter of complaint to the head office or something.

Martin:
Stand firm with them and accept no compromise. They have damaged your wheels by being careless and have put you through unnecessary trouble. It is not unreasonable for you to expect and demand two new replacements.
They can keep the damaged wheels and do what they wish with them.
I feel for you.

Yes mate really annoying!!
Didn't get any compensation, just refused to pay him.

Tyre fitter swore blind he didn't do it. It's hard to go any further with the matter as it was his word against mine especially with it being a small local tyre company I used.

Hope you have better luck with Kwik-Fit.
