Right, im seriously considering stripping the car of all the good bits and sending whats left to be scrapped.
so how much does everybody think that a really clean, full 5 door interior from a GL would be worth?
Bumpers?
Wings?
Wiper Motor?
etc etc?
Lol, seriously tempted into the world of MK2 ownership, but its needing to be funded by this MK3
-
Being a non GTI means you will not see much in stripping it.
-
grrr, at this rate im gonna have to smash it into a wall and get the insurance to pay out

If the paintwork is clean and tidy you should do ok stripping it.
-
The smooth bumpers maybe of interest to another red Gti owner. :undecided:
-
majority of bodywork is tidy, only scrapping it because i cant afford to get it through its MOT next month.
-
What's wrong with it?

Read the first post mate
-
needs both sills welded, a brake line replacing, both the front shock absorbers replaced, the tracking's out, needs 2 new tyres, and the offside front wheel bearing has gone.
Tyres arent an issue, i could get them, but the garage are saying the weldings gonna be around £300, and the bearings going to be near £90 to replace. Add to that the 50 quid for new shock absorbers and 60 quid for tyres and the price to get the car through next MOT is going to be close to £400 at least.
-
That is a fair amout of work to do - but on the other hand once it is done you wont have to do any of it again for a while (except tyres)
I would try and raise the money to keep it mate - looks like a nice car!
-
it is a nice car, interior is clean enough to eat your dinner straight from it! I'm going to try and sell it, and if i havent sold it by the time the MOT expires, then I'll have to store it off the road for a few months while I raise the cash to get the work done :(
Gutted because the engine and gearbox are both lovely, its hell-as nippy!
-
£300 for the sills?????
Look for somewhere way cheaper mate!
-
£300 and thats just labour...not including the materials.
-
Way, way, way OTT!
New sills cost £48 quid, labour should be no more than £150
-
iv just remembered my cousin does a bit of welding, so im gonna go and see him later and see how much he'll do it for. the rest of the stuff that needs doing im not bothered about, i can do that myself...well, except the wheel bearing, the garage will have to do that (£80  )
-
Re: Wheel bearing...
Take off the hub and go to the garage with a new bearing (£20) and ask someone to press out the old bearing and press in a new one.
Tell him you don't want a receipt and it'll be a tenner.
-
one of my mates said that you could change a front bearing using the old bearing and a hammer...that true?

Not really, you need a press.
-
cool. looks like my cars in for another period off the road then :( back to the vauxhall corsuuurgghhh
-
I did mine without a press, but was a bit lucky as I had a socket that was exactly the right fit so I carefully smashed it with a hammer :P Though wayne is right you should really use a press to avoid possibly damaging it.
sayign that though for £80 you could have quite a few goes :)

There's a way of doing it where you put a bolt through the hole in the middle then tighten a nut over the bearing to push it out slowly... it's hard work unless you have a really long ratchet or a breaker bar to fit over the one you've got.
