Am trying to find some info on the power steering set up on the 8v GTI. I've had a quick go with the search function but no real luck. What I'm really looking for is any pictures of the pump and its drive belt as I want to check what differences (if any) there are between the 8v and 16v set ups. I'm designing a part that I want to be suitable for use on both models but I currently only have direct access to my car which is a 16v. If anyone has any suitable pics or info, I'd be muchos grateful if they could post them up.

Thanks. Is bracketry etc. the same as well, and does pump sit in roughly the same place under the car?

Brackets all the same, and sits in the same area too as the engine blocks are the same.

Isn't the breather different on the block? or is that the mk2?

Block is the same, as far as I know, but some stuff around it, like the breather is different.

the pas system is the same on 1.8-2.0 8v and 16v engines, the only difference is the alternator setup. early ones have a massive spring under the alternator, later models have a seperate tensioner pulley. both setups can be swapped though if you also change the alternator bracket. waterpump pulley is also the same, but crank pulley is different due to the abf having a thicker timing belt sprocket.
the physical block is the same between 8v and 16v, though the 2e block doesn't have a hole for a crank sensor. the pistons and conrods differ 8v/16v, also so do the intermediate shaft, oil pump and timing belt sprockets. crankshaft has different part number, but i think its the same shape. something like abf is forged or something. not 100% sure?
BBM motorsport do an ABA->ABF conversion kit for the guys in the US, but I cant remember if a crank is included. I'd check but cant seem to get to their website

Does the ABF have piston cooling jets maybe rubjonny could confirm.

2E, early ADY and ABF do, late ADY and AGG do not. interesting, wayne do you know if jets can be bolted on to non jet equipped engines?
edit: early ABA have them too, late do not
edit2: also got on the bbm and they dont list a crank for the ABF conversion kits, so it does look like the cranks are interchangeable, maybe. obv you need later 8v block and crank if you want to run abf on abf mangament, either that or custom crank sensor hardware fitted somewhere else.
but this thread has sailed a little off course now due to hijacking. its almost like being on cgti :grin:

Wahey, me thread's gone walkabout! Before you know it we'll all be going hammer and tongs in round 12,645 of 8v vs. 16v. And don't get me fookin' started on the VR6 lot! :grin:
