Title: Is my MK6 GTI 'chipped'?
Post by: justinoV5 on 14 October 2010, 17:27
As so many people's cars on here seem to have engine power increased i have started to wonder whether my 6 month old MK6 may have been 'chipped' by the first owner.  I have only had her two weeks and 500 miles but I am wondering for two reasons:

1. I have a DSG shuddering issue which i am booked in for next week, so i dont want to have any warranty issues.

2. When pulling away hard in the dry i can get lots of wheel spin in first gear. As i have come out of a rear wheel drive car with lots more power I am a little surprised about the amount of wheelspin or is it just a characteristic of the GTI MK6? The car does seem quick but not sure if it's doing 0-60 quicker than the manufacturers figures suggest. Do you guys get this wheelspin on standard cars? My Dunlop tyres have about 5mm tread so i'd be surprised if it was down to them.

I assume there is no way of telling if the ECU has been played with or resetting it before i take the car in to the main dealers?

Not unless you can get it on a rolling road?!?

Where did you get the car? Can you contact the last owner?

I have a DSG GTI. In pulling away from standstill in sport mode mine shudders as well. I think this is just a characteristic of the car tbo. I think sport mode is better suited to when your already on the move and not when pulling away from standstill. I assume this is what your experiencing??

There are various technical ways to tell, but the most practical are with vagcom (live data logging) or on a rolling road. If you're near the midlands I can help.

I wouldn't read too much into the wheel spin. Depends on what tyres you have and all sorts and first gear wheel spin ? I could do that in my 1.4 Clio.

As Top said the only definitive way to tell is using a computer and the methods said.

In the wet/damp can you get it to spin its wheels in 3rd?? I can with my remap... but couldnt without. Not very scientific i know!

If you cannot then wait until you get a remap

Maybe have a race with someone that has a 2.0 fsi or tsi engine to compare or a car with same power output as a golf gti?

I get wheel spin if I can it through 1st and 2nd gears even on a good dry road surface. I have noticed wheel spin in 3rd on a wet road surface only.

Thanks for the replies. I only really get wheelspin in first and only when pushing hard so i'm guessing i'm not chipped. Also did a couple of 0-60s and they were around 7 seconds dead.

Have to say I imagine the car would be handful with another 40-50 Bhp. I can see why the R is 4 Wheel drive!

My boss test drove a GTI and an R back to back (don't ask me how he got a test drive in an R, I have no idea) ad he said the R was very numb and the GTI was much more fun. If the MK6 is anything like the MK5 (which it is) it will easily handle an extra 50bhp, easy.

An option is to go test drive a Scirocco R and see if your feels as quick and accelerates as fast above 3K with your foot down at higher speeds.
