Title: How do you all stop yourselves from spending money on your car....
Post by: twistedblack69 on 14 October 2010, 16:59
Hopefully putting this into writing will help me out a bit, but I've got student loans, and the temptation to kit my car out with a set of ATS Cups, an ABF engine drop in, Porsche tombstone fronts.....it's killing me. The worst part is the car still has some work that needs doing before it's back up to scratch, which I think "if I spend money doing that, then I can buy nice stuff for it" and try and justify it to myself! I just sit in most of my lecturers doodling car stuff, but I need to save my loan. I can't be the only person having this problem?

Nope you certainly aren't alone.

I'm a student too and spend far too much time looking at car stuff when I should be doing work. Like for now instance, I'm writing my dissertation (on car culture funnily enough ) and am currently surrounded by books and notes. I also have a design project due in tomorrow morning and yet I am sat on here looking through the classifieds  :lipsrsealed:

Money wise, I only allow myself to spend cash from working and savings rather than the loan, although I did have a maxed overdraft last year from fixing the mk2  Fortunately paid most of it off now.

No real advice to offer but student to student, I get ya  I've left the car at home now in a bid to keep it tucked away, out of site out of mind and all that. A super busy 3rd year means I have no choice!

Haha yea well I'm from Portsmouth and go to Portsouth uni so the car's sat outside :s my first year I got into about £2000 of debt, but I've paid all but a £750 overdraft off now :D I'm chuffed. I thought I was right down sh!t creek at the time

I'm not a student... But do have the responsibility of running my own business and keeping a roof over my family's head and in these very hard times that's no mean feat....

So I make sure I have to save up for the parts I want or do a bit of buying and selling to raise funds for the "Car Projects".... By saving up first it makes you think a few times about "Can I Justify" or "Do I Really Need" these parts or upgrades...

It took me 3 months to save up for my 1st set of RM's... But by waiting I found a superb set in Germany and at the time prices had began to fall so a double bonus... I have since bought a white set that I really wanted in the first place but could not afford them... But to get them I have sold the other set... and then sold the tyres on to someone else... In the end they have cost me nearly nothing to "Upgrade"...

HTH

I keep telling myself that Christine needs presents, or else she'll through a tantrum and not work

The car gets more presents than the mrs!

i've never been one for uncontrolled spending, i've always had discipline when it comes to money.

The golf has rarely got nice presents, usually just bargain ebay finds, i waited 1 year for a cheap exhaust and ran without a backbox the whole time, managed to get a full stainless for £10 on ebay.

The rest of my hard earned is usually spent on keeping it going. My last car was a project of love, the golf is more neccessity - it still doesn't even have speakers after 4 years of owning it!

I find i control my spending my time looking at cars i truly want. But if your golf is your love, then your screwed!

I haven't owned a golf very long but I'm finding it an expensive task. Obviously as I haven't owned it very long my impulse / novelty buying will soon wear off (I hope)!

If you think a MK2 Golf is Expensive you wanna try and keep an Audi S2 Coupe on the road....

When you can get parts they are 5 times the price of VW's.... Not to mention 15 MPG...

yeh, i think i'm the odd one out in my group of friends. I worked through uni to support my lifestyle. Then within 1 year i'd paid off my student loan in full.

Having a bit of foresight and common sense when it comes to spending is what our country needs!

too true, but try running 2 cars (one of which is an on-going project, the other is a mk3 that refuses to die), a mortgage, and now a mrs who currently isnt in work....  :lipsrsealed:

i think its been a mix of luck and common sense so far.

I like the line Neo Badness has on his sig, goes something like 'I spend my money on petrol and parts, the rest I waste'. Sums it up nicely.

It does require a bit of sense, you have to look at what money you have and what you need to spend to ensure a suitable standard of living. I spend a bit of my wage on parts for my car every month, as I do with my other main hobby, but I have to limit it and not forget what else I want to achieve. Meaning, I need enough left over for fun, like fuel for pleasure drives, weekends out/away, race entries (MTB), holidays etc. So budget!

Just remember, if you car is working, and you dont really have the money to spare, then you dont need the parts!

How on earth do you guys manage to have lots of money off of your loans to spend on cars!

I just about scrape through to cover everything. My car gets things brought for it after I've saved an awful lot of money up (as it's usually something big and expensive that's gone) I have a kind of running car fund that I add money in to when I have some spare.

I don't have my car here in Southampton so I also save on fuel expenses. Yay!

I go through stages.
Some times I think to my self, I am happy with how the car is. Im not going to spend any thing on her unless its to fix a major fualt/put fuel in it.

Il then be on the forums scouring through, and see something come up at a price I would be happy to pay. That pretty much f**ks up the whole plan for not spending money. Everyone knows then when you buy one part, your probably going to need to buy another 5 bits to make it fit/work. It keeps spiralling on from there really every month!

Not to mention I usualy have times where I know exactly what I want and how I want to do it. I usualy just go out and do it and spend what ever I need to spend in order to achieve it. Be it immediately, or over a long period of time.

Its the pub that catches me out, it drives me mad. I will look at somthing nice for my car for say £100 and argue with myself that its too much but then i will go out every night of the week for a swift half plus a lil extra at the weekends and i have spent near enough that £100 that i couldnt justify spending and all on funky tasting water

Are you a student too then? Seems you are doing ok with your project, bbs wheels etc

Similar to you, car stuff comes from savings, never loan unless in a real emergency i.e something major has broken. Bills get paid first though obviously and anything left over might go on the car. I go without other stuff that perhaps some others would buy i.e clothes, technology etc. I don't really do clubs, and the pubs around me are cheap as chips

I stop myself spending money on it by spending all my money on it,I then have no money left to spend on it thus stopping me spending money on it!

Yeah I am a student. The majority of my golf was bankrolled by selling my 206 but the more recent stuff has been brought through me working my bum off and inspired by the realisation that an awful lot on the car was perished, things such as brake lines and rear suspension and whatnot.

Bloody car!! I see so often people buying so much with their student loans and I have no idea how they do it! I guess some people do get more loan so that might explain it.

There is something much more satisfying about spending money for things that the car does not desperately need compared with spending money to fix something that broke.

Either way, as a Yorkshireman, I still have difficulty prising the money out of myself!!

i find it quite easy,  i aquires myself some cheep and nasty shed to drive around in daily that only ever needs the odd 2nd hand tyer and occasional set of brake pads then i'll spend about a grand on stuff for the golf but never actualy get round to fitting it because i'm to busy fixing or building cars for other people

Fall out of love with your car lol, thats what Ive kind of done, which isnt good when it isnt running, I find myself working on it for 30 mins, getting stuck then not being arsed any more  When it fires up and ive mapped it then sure Ill fall in love again!

Plus we may as well be flushing our money down the toilet is enough to stop me over spending lol!

well before i got banned from driving i didnt stop myself spending money on the car i just stopped myself drinking

giving up drinking saved me about £150 a week which meant that each month i could justify spending £600 on cars in general and that did me alright

for this i couild have bought something like a brand new golf on finance i suppose ... but wheres the fun in that lol

I find the best way to stop spending money on a car is to get another car and spend money on that instead.

Then run out of money and sell some parts.

Then spend more money on the car.

Or as some call it: The money-spiral of doom.

Lock it up in a garage, so people can't come and f*ck it over!!! Keep it to look at on sunny days.....and thats all.

Some nobody broke into my car last night, no idea who did it but lots of damage and tried to have the whole car away :( Absolutely gutted.
