hi guys was just wondering iv been offered an 1985 mk2 1.3 cheap and it is an incredibly sound body. i wanna slap an abf in it but dunno if its the right model for it? would i be better off looking for an old gti to do this or is the 1.3 mainly the same? it also has a 4 speed would that be hard to change to another gearbox? thanks guys

Can do, but you'd need the loom and fuel pumps. You'd need the gear box as well.

Would you need a GTi rear beam as well?

If the body is good, then why not! You can pinch almost all of the other bits from the MK3 (gearbox/loom/engine). You'd be better buying a whole MK3 (4 stud ideally), then you can pinch its beam, bones, brakes.

IIRC a 90 spec car would be easier to convert, :undecided:

Why not run the ABF on carbs.
You will still need to uprate brakes etc.

yeah the brakes would be the first thing to do cause i hope to use it for a bit of racing and the occasional drag. what brakes would be best? thanks

I also have a 1.3 B reg sitting in my garage. Keep us posted on what you do to yours and I might do the same to mine.

with it being early the fusebox is different to mk3, you could fit a complete 90spec mk2 car loom or just splice pre-90 plugs onto the abf loom. its not particularly difficult but i can do conversion looms if you arnt keen./ you dont HAVE to swap the beam but fitting one with a roll bar in from a gti is a nice upgrade. you could just bolt on an aftermarket arb though which would be just as good. no rear discs but you dont really need em drums work just fine. up front need to change pretty much everything bar subframe and wishbones, even brake servo needs swapping for a 9" one. nothing thats particularly difficult, and if you get a donor car as above makes things easier. complete 16v would be a nice place to start would give you everything you need including fuel setup, though would need to go 5 stud if you use its complete running gear. depends if you're bothered about that or not!
abf -> mk2 is a bolt in thing using all off the shelf vw parts if you buy the right bits, only thing that isnt direct swap is the wiring loom
