Ok, so, I've got a 1.6 at the moment, bog standard and I want a Mk3 TDI engine in.
Reasons for this is it will be more reliable as a diesel, cheaper to run, the same if not cheaper to insure etc etc.
Im wondering how difficult this will be? Petrol to diesel, one mk to another?
How long do you think it will take? What needs to be changed other than the engine, petrol tank etc?
Is it worth it?

as above, AAZ engine (TD) is a good swap and fairly straight forward

where is your hazard switch, dash or column? If on the column it'll be a piece o wee wiring wise as it has same fusebox as the mk3 so loom will pretty much plug in. If on dash its different fusebox so some splicing will be required. The TDI has an electronic fuel pump, plus its diesel (duh!) so I would fit the tank, pump and lines plus under-car filter from the TDI MK3 donor. you'll also have to add the wiring for the fuel pump but thats not difficult. if you have the later fusebox dead easy, strip the pump wiring out of the mk3 rear loom, lay it down next to the mk2 rear loom then plug it in. if pre-90 then you just need to splice 1 wire into your fusebox.
change ecu and pump relays over and bobs your uncle. if wire splicing not your game i can do you a conversion loom :)

why don't you just buy a diesel mk2 and save yourself the ballache?

There's a dub thread with a fella who put a PD in his MK2 - looks like a huge amount of work, but would be an impressive tool!

TBH I would not even attempt this without the donnor car on my drive you find the small parts you will need allways cost the most :wink:

Haaa the car might be a dog but that TDI sounds not bad?
There was another one on the road but must have been removed that werent too bad either?

sounds like a racey tractor. I don't miss mine at all as it was undeniably quick, but it didn't feel quick. I would have transferred mine into a rallye if I'd kept it.
