HI Guys,
ive recently aquired a 2l 8v Anniversary Gti, been around the doors and engine has cut out whilst in full motion.
One day alone cut out 3-4 times, I am not mechanically experienced but would like to try and sort myself, any ideas anyone??
Also Abs and hand brake light remain lit whilst driving??
Cheers

ABS light indicated a minor ABS problem, handbrake light could be either sticking handbrake switch or a major ABS problem. Mine was on when the wired on the front sensors had been rubbing against the wheel and caused them to short out.
The cutting out could be lots of things, start off with the free stuff like throttle body cleaning and earth points overhaul. Then move on to electrical stuff like the ECU relay (which is one of the most common cutting out causes) and fuel pump relay. If that doesn't help I'd get myself a copy of vagcom off ebay for a tenner and scan for fault codes, if it's an electrical issue it will point it out, if not then you know it's a mechanical problem. Also, check your vacuum pipes, although they shouldn't really cause cutting out.
G' luck

Things to check/change:
ECU relay
Fuel pump relay
Crank sensor (these become brittle with age and the wires break)
Distributor
Coilpack
After I checked all these:
Mine was a bad ECU earth under the battery tray.

ABS fault is common, search the forums it's a pretty simple fix.
Handbrake light is also a break warning light. It could mean your brakekpads are wearing thin, or that your brake fluid is low. Most probably to do with your ABS fault - but worth checking the fluid/pads.
Oh and an anni (P) is actually a 1996
