All, I almost hesitate to post this, given how petty it may seem compared to some of the questions on here, but here goes ...
The parcel shelf in my car is really annoying me. It is cheap and flimsy compared to my wife's Mk4. I think VW have cut some corners on the MK6 and this is one of the areas where they have done so.
I've already snapped one of the strings that that hold the shelf up when you open the boot (that silly plastic dongle thing on the end got caught on something in the boot).
So, my question is whether anyone has replaced the strings with those from the MK4 (which have a nice retractor/winder device) and, if so, where did you get the parts and was it easy to do (I'm not much of a DIYer)?
Thanks. I feel better for having vented now.

It's not petty mate and a good question, although it's not a new issue with the mk6 the mk5 was the same, those dongle things swing about when the boot is closed and hit the underside of the parcel shelf, although not so much in my 6. Would be nice if it was an easy job, any chance of a pic of the mk4 setup?

The mk4 was in another class when it came to attention to detail / build quality. Unfortunately it didn't handle or perform (GTI's I mean). Wish they had combined the build quality of the mk4 with the dynamics / engine of the mk5/6. Mk7 anyone?

The mk4 was nicely designed and solidly built but the fancy rubber coated plastic has a horrible habit of peeling, I've known a couple lowish mileage mk4 GTIs have their seat bolsters collapse (the early ones with Recaros were lovely though) and the awful plastic wood cracks for no reason.
However, the parcel shelf is an excellent design, I'll give you that!
I reckon the mk7 will see more cost cutting and attempts at weight reduction.
Still, I'll have probably been made redundant by then so won't have to worry about it!!!
What we now need is for someone who has a friend or relative with a mk4 to compare parcel shelves with their mk6 to see if any bits can be easily modified/bodged to fit. Then all it takes is a visit to a scrap yard.......

There's a discussion on this issue here:

And the part is here:

We love our MK4 (cost new - £18K) - so much so that when we bought the MK6 (cost new - £30K), we could not bring ourselves to sell it. It's 10 years old, has never gone wrong and is in great condition. I very much doubt that the MK6 will last as well (regrettably).

Yeah, for what you'll get for it you're far better off keeping your mk4.
My Father recently part ex'd his Bora 1.8t which he'd had from more or less new (pre reg'd at dealer). He's not exactly gentle with his cars but the Bora was still in fine condition at 6 or 7 years old. The new Jetta that replaced it won't last as well.

It's the same with humans IMO.

I think I must be a mk6 then Asker, ageing, bit overweight and not made very well........

And I am an aged (Mk2), underweight and worn out!

I sold my MK5, over 5 years old and 80000 miles, still looked like new, never any issues, can't see the MK6 being any different.

I have fitted the retractable strings to my Rocco, just . Not too bad, but needs a bit of drilling, a hot glue gun.
Picked up a set of retractors string things from the bay for £5, and drilled the shelf out.
Used the HG gun to fix the mechanisms to the underside of the shelf. All good now. Managed to remove the dongle things whole too.
(there is a plastic key that holds the rubber ball onto the string thing)

Thanks for this. It's good to hear someone's done it.
Is there an ebay seller you can point us in the direction of, or was it just a one-off?
Thanks.
