Just sold my 'old' RS4 Avant which was a superb car (but nearing 10 years old, it was time to go) and am now faced with a conundrum having driven both the S3 Sportback and Mk6 GTI (both DSG). Like them both, but the Audi's refinement seems to have a edge for me at the moment.
Prices of GTI's seem to be right up there as well and I thought they would be substantially cheaper (definitely out of touch).
This caught my eye, do you think it's worth the money . . . . http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201036367471442/sort/priceasc/usedcars/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/fuel-type/petrol/maximum-age/up_to_1_year_old/transmission/automatic/body-type/hatchback/quantity-of-doors/5/model/golf/make/volkswagen/saved-search-id/2c92181f2b9a6f74012b9b4c7ce10004/radius/1500/page/2/postcode/gu99hq?logcode=p.
but has extras such as: Monza Shadow's, Touch screen SatNav, Special Paint, Vienna Leather.

Let me know what your looking for...... Spec wise
Evo1986

VW West London is part of the Inchcape Group.
Know the Service Dept which is very good.
Not so impressed with their Sales Team.
Have you seen the car and driven it?

Nice spec. That's the same dealer I brought mine from. Its likely the car is x demo as was mine. I paid 27k for mine as spec in sig below.
The garage is o.k. but its quite a small dealership (not that I guess that matters).
Maybe worth trying to source a car through EVO1986 as above (as he seems like a nice guy).

MAW: They have moved to a new showroom on the Western Avenue.
-
I'm not suprised by that tbo. What was the name of your salesman? I'm racking my brain but I can't remember the guy who sold me mine.

Mine came from VW Inchcape Telford as VW Inchcape West London were not very competitive.

Thanks for replies
Salesman's name is Huseyin ~ seems pleasant enough, but I wait to be disappointed with the finance options. Drove the car, albeit only a short distance so didn't really get to experience the full package. Liked the car and am taking it for another spin on Saturday. Then hope to go back to Audi and drive the S3 to see what the difference is back-to-back.
With regard to spec, this car tick most of the boxes for me. So I suppose I'm going to pay a premium due to the London factor. Dealer margins are probably quite 'tight' at the moment?? Will try to get them to throw in a dog-guard, matts, etc, but am more interested in what the PCP package delivers, amount of deposit and resultant monthly payments.
-
Cool good luck with the test drive etc. Make sure you check the monza wheels for any signs of kerbing. When I received my car one of the alloys was kerbed which I wasn't happy about on a nearly new 27K car. In fairness to them they replaced the alloy without any fuss or argument.

Know the guy. Hmmmm
Best one there is the German guy, if he is still there.
-
So gti 5 door dsg, leather, nav...... Any other colours you would consider.
-
How much was the s3 you looked at Simon? and what was the spec?
I've had both. both brand new, both dsg, both white, both on a 10 plate.
I could give you my honest opinion if needed.
-
I recomend you contact EVO above as hes a good guy and helped me out when i needed it. Its rare to find a guy like him working for VW imho.

Have you tried the Golf R?

Have you tried the Golf R?
No, but a tad pricey for me . Looks like a fantastic car. . . .
-
Wowzers! 27k - thats a lot of money! I'd be more inclined to go for one thats a little older and see if you can get the price closer to 20k.
If your not into that, I would ring dealers all over the country and see whats deals/discounts you can get. They all deliver for free or you can collect easy enough.
-
I agree £27k is probably too much. I paid £23k at end of Aug for spec below (basically same as the one you saw but with camera instead of nav) - it was an early one, May 09 but with only 10500 miles on the clock.

VW West London tend to be a bit pricey. Try a bit of bargaining.
-
Ouch! Price is v high IMHO.
I paid £22,700 for a 10 plate 5dr, 3800 miles, leather but no dsg or nav. So I'd say that's worth about £24k

Shut it

I've testdriven the s3 sportback and even tho its got ~50 BHP more i cant say I really noticed it. With all the extras audi was more expensive. When I went to see the mk6 gti its sporting looks sold it to me regardless of testdrive, thought it cant be much different to my mk 5. Although I did test drive it before ordered one! Both nice motors but only one is a hot hatch!
-
I came from owning an Audi and the Golf is very near but not quite Audi standards but then you pays your money...
I looked at the S3 but this is due to be repaced in 2011 so was not really an option and relatively speaking was expensive.
1 month on, I lov the Golf and whilst I still like the Audi brand and cars I am enjoying being back in a Golf
Food for thought......

I thought that was the thing with VW/Audi, that the Audi brand was higher standard and price and that VW was that little bit lower standard and therefore a lower price and of course down a bit further is the Skoda standard. Mind you their dealers could outshine VW anyday of the week.
-
A standard s3 sportback comes with 18" alloys, leather and bi xenons. add these to a 5 door GTI and it takes you to over £28k. There's not much in it at all pricewise. You also get 4 wheel drive and 60 or so more bhp with the Audi which adds up to the obvious. Together with better fit and finish and general quality and prestige......need i say more?
-
Unfortunately, the Sportback S3 looks a frump.

Unfortunately, the Sportback S3 looks a frump.
I think it looks good from the front and overall a bit more prestige but also looks like a tourer/estate not a hot hatch.

Let's call a spade a shovel!
IMO it looks old, old, old inside and outside.
It looks ever so busy side on with all those unnecessary creases and that massive door protection. Like a Hovis multigrain loaf on wheels.
In fact, I drove one today. No thanks.
The GTi looks great, is better looking than the R, but the R is probably the better car but not worth the premium. Am I bothered?
Besides, the Mk6 GTi Forum is so much more fun than that boring R one.
-
 I do like the 3 door S3 and i nearly got one as it was not much difference on price but the GTI did everything i needed as im not a speed freak. I do think the Audi has better fit and finish, better QC and attension to detail. But my parents were Audi fans were i was always golf.
-
New gti coming to Cheltenham VW

Monza shadows
£30,140

The 3 door looks OK, but the 5 door is simply out of proportion.

here here..................
Took in a 52 plate s3 against a mk6 gti, took it for a little drive the other cay. Pocket rocket but very aged.

Im not picking on this statment but in gereral I never undersatnd why people say things like this, is it to make them feel better they chose an R? Why would he need an R anyway if he gets to 20mph in London he will be luckie  and 0-20 in a GTI is not much different to 0-20 in an R  if he is bothered about speed that is. (I can here the 4wd traction argument now, but 4wd bogs down so just as bad as wheel spin  ).
I could buy an R now for cash if i wanted too as another car on top of the 4 cars i personally currently own at this time, i could have bought an R instead of the GTI back in march and even looked at an in stock scirocco R when i thought my GTI deal was about to go titsup but the GTI did everything i needed in a car and the cost difference at the time for me (because of discount) was 10K, that 10K i could easy use for something else like another car for winter use, a track car or whatever.
Can you tell im not happy been up since 6.30am on my day off
Rant over

I was joking Snoops! just a bit of banter thats all

I know you were, thats why i said i was not picking on this statment  or you posting it as i understand were you were coming from with it. My coment was in gerenal, not in reply to your post but in general to when this has come up before when others have said more or less similar more than once and not actually been joking.

but 4wd bogs down so just as bad as wheel spin
Aint that the truth... to avoid it, requires a lightning re-dip of the clutch mid way through to get those revs back up, almost like a double de clutch. God only knows what damage that does to the car!

Got an email this morning looks like we have lost this bloke to a s3 sportback...................
-
No taste then
-
I would have got the R :lipsrsealed:
